Miss Glass’ Third Grade Unit on Shiloh

Dear Families,
We are studying the book Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor for the next two
weeks. We will develop an understanding of comprehension of what we read.
We will talk about the problem, solution, setting, theme and characters in the
book. The students need to be able to identify the previous listed and be able
to write about the chapters in the lessons. We will be learning new
vocabulary from the book. This unit will be based on the interests of the
students and they will look forward to reading what happens next in the book
while completing the lessons with it.
Enjoy!

Practice Ideas:
1. Character Traits- students may create a character folder. They can draw
the character on the outside and place their traits on the inside of the
folder.
2. Paper chain events- students may create a paper chain. On each link
they will put an event that happened in the chapter they read about.
They can study the chain to remind them of the events that happened in
the book.
3. Bringing the Setting to Life- they may get a sow box and create the
setting of the book. This will allow them to see the setting f the book
come to life.
4. Book Trailer- they may create a trailer for the book. Have them record
their video on an iPad or phone. This will allow them to think about the
problem, solution, and characters in the book.
5. Vocabulary Bingo- there are lots of websites to create bingo cards.
Place the vocabulary words on the bingo sheets. The whole family can
practice the vocabulary words together. The caller will say the
definition of one of the vocabulary words and the players will mark the
word that it matches.
