“READING COMPREHENSION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS IN PROFESSIONAL SUBJECTS ”

Background of the Study

Pretorious (2002) states that reading plays a significant role in the learning process
or learners as it does not only gives them an autonomous access to various information but
also it is an effective tool in learning which allows them to create interpretation on a
particular written material, a way of obtaining new knowledge. In addition, according to
Chege (2012) having a poor reading ability will lead students unable to grasp the exact idea
conveyed by a certain text which defers learning since teaching-learning process widely
involved the use of textbooks, academic materials and other essential information express
through writing.

According to some studies, reading comprehension plays a big role in excelling

academic performance; however there are also studies which argued that the two are not
correlated. Study findings from the ILO-ILO State College of Fisheries states that reading
comprehension and academic performance does not have a logical connection statistically.
From the study it was found out that reading comprehension does not affect the academic
performance and same as academic performance also does not affect reading
comprehension (M. Abiera, et.al 2018).
