fig(1) Goodman, Soderberg, and Gerber lines.

1- For the cantilevered beam shown in Fig (2), which is acted upon by a fluctuating tip
force (F ) of between (10.8 N) and (25.2 N), determine
a. The factor-of-safety (fs ) using the Goodman theory
b. The factor-of-safety (fs ) where the mean stress (σm) is held constant
c. The factor-of-safety (fs ) where the alternating stress (σv ) is held constant

where The beam is made of cold-drawn steel, ground to the dimensions shown, then
welded to the vertical support at its left end. The beam operates at room
temperature. Also, (σu ) is 595 MPa and K f is 1.2 (due to welds at left end of beam).

2- For the stepped rod shown in Fig (3), which is acted upon by both a fluctuating
axial force (F 1 ) of between − 900 N and ,600 N and a constant axial force (F 2 ) of
2250 N, determine
a- The factor-of-safety (fs) using the Goodman theory.
b- The factor-of-safety (fs) using the Soderberg theory.

assuming that [σu = 735 MPa ,σ'e = 455 MPa , Kf = 1.15] (due to change in diameter).

3- For the solid shaft shown in Fig (4), which is acted upon by a fluctuating torque (T )
of between 2700 N·m and 3300 N·m, determine the factor of safety (fs ) using the
Goodman ,Gerber and Soderberg theory.

assuming that σu = 630 MPa , kt = 1.65 and q = 0.9 (notch sensitivity)

4- for the figure (5) shown if the force ( F= 100sin (t) )N where (t) is the time and
diameter of the cylinder equal 1 cm assuming the bar made from steel which σu =300
MPa and σy =200 MPa find the factor of safety.

5- Determine the size of a piston rod subjected to a total load of having cyclic
fluctuations from 15 kN in compression to 25 kN in tension. The endurance limit is 360
MPa and yield strength is 400 MPa. Take impact factor = 1.25, factor of safety = 1.5,
surface finish factor = 0.88 and stress concentration factor = 2.25.
6- Find the diameter of a shaft made of 37 Mn2 steel having the ultimate tensile
strength as 600 MPa and yield stress as 440 MPa. The shaft is subjected to
completely reversed axial load of 200 kN Neglect stress concentration factor and
assume surface finish factor as 0.8. The factor of safety may be taken as 1.5.

7- A simply supported shaft between bearings carries a steady load of 10 kN at the

centre. The length of shaft between bearings is 450 mm. Neglecting the effect of
stress concentration, find the minimum diameter of shaft. Given that Endurance limit
= 600 MPa; surface finish factor = 0.87; size factor = 0.85; and factor of safety = 1.6.
