4 Name: ANSWERS

WORKSHEET NINE SPRINGS

1. How stiff or stretchy the spring is. A stiff spring has a large spring constant.

2. (i) Hang the spring from a support and then attach a range of different
weights to it.
(ii) For each weight force, record the extension of the spring.
(iii) Graph results, plotting the weight force on the y-axis and the extension
on the x-axis.
(iv) Measure the gradient of the graph line. This is the value of “k”.

3. Easy

4. (a) k = F/x = 2/0.1 = 20 Nm-1

(b) k = F/x = 12/0.03 = 400 Nm-1

5. F = kx = 200 x 0.25 = 50 N

6. x = F/x = 1200/2x105 = 0.006 m (6 mm)

7. The work done in stretching 120
the spring is represented by the
area under the graph line. 80
