Language reference – Modal verbs

♦ should/shouldn't is used for giving advice or an opinion, its


meaning being it is/isn't a good thing to do or the right thing to do.

It is often used with I think/I don't think/Do you think...?


e.g. You look tired. You should go to bed.
I think the government should do more to reduce crime.
You shouldn't believe everything you read in newspapers.
-- You can also use should if you want to specify someone's
responsibility – Managers should relate the brand's values in a
meaningful way.

♦have to/don't have to is used for talking about duties or


responsibilities – I have to check the mail in the morning and welcome
visitors to the office and for indicating an absence of obligation or
necessity – I don't have to pay an invoice until next month

♦can, could, may are used for asking and giving permission.
Could is more tentative than can. May is considered more formal and
is often used in written English.
e.g. You can't smoke here.
Could I have the day off? May I use your phone for a local call,
please?

♦must/don't have to is used for orders we give to ourselves – We


must pay these bills straight away; it is also used for strong
recommendations – You must get the new model.

-- Use mustn't if you want to prohibit something – You mustn't


interrupt her while she's on the phone.

Remember: must is strong and can appear impolite if we use it to


give orders or instructions. Have to more common in spoken
language.
