Synopsis:
The story takes place in 1981, in Gotham City (a fictive American city in
American comics books) where Arthur Fleck works in a clown agency. Despised
and misunderstood, he leads a dreary life on the fringes of society and lives in a
shabby building with his mother Penny. One night, he is assaulted in the subway
by three alcoholics traders of Wayne Enterprise, pushing him to kill them. His
gesture inspires a part of the population, the idea to also take it out to the powerful.
In this framing society, Arthur turns little by little in madness and finally become
The Joker, a dangerous psychic killer victim of hallucinations and le biggest
criminal of Gotham City.

Abstract:
Arthur Fleck is a man suffering of mental illness pushing him, especially,
to laugh unintentionally, mostly in awkward situations. He dreams of becoming a
humorist, his mother Penny always told him that he has a
purpose “to smile and put on a happy face, to bring laughter
and joy to the world”. Indeed, he feels no sadness in his life,
even when he works as a clown to provide his needs and of
his mother. Gotham City is on the brink of chaos, plagued by
unemployment, to criminality and to the financer crises,
leaving a good part of the population in misery.

Those quotes from the movie, summarizes clearly what is going on in his
mind while everyone around him thinks that he is a monster and a dangerous
psychic killer. Yes, he maybe is a dangerous psychic killer, but the real question
is, who did him become like this? This movie wants to point out the fact that we
have to be in someone’s shoes to feel and understand what he is going through
and why he is doing certain things like killing people. Maybe, he killed those
people who were bulling him for laughing, despite him, because he had the
occasion to revenge himself for his awful past.
Indeed, the pathological laugh of Arthur Fleck is a famous mental illness.
The prodromic laugh, it is caused by neurological lesions or tumors. In one way,
his handicap is real, he is not faking it. We learn that Arthur was beaten up by his
father while his (adoptive) mother was in the asylum of Arkam. This is perhaps
the reason of his mental illness. During the movie, you will always be confused
between what is real or not. They made this movie in a certain way to make us as
insane and in delirium as him. (Spoiler alert) In fact, at the end of the movie The
Joker is in an asylum in Arkham imaging a funny story, which he keeps it for
himself towards the therapist. But what is this story? Finally, wouldn’t it be the
story of Arthur Fleck that we were watching before this final scene?

What is the medulla oblongata?

The medulla oblongata is the anatomic zone of the brain (nervous system
content in the skull) constituted by the inferior part of the brainstem localized
between de brain above and the spinal cord underneath.
It contains the pyramid beams constituted of motor nerves which carry the
stimuli (nervous stimulation: orders) going from the brain to the bone marrow.
This area ties in the decussation of the pyramids. This as for consequence that
each cerebral hemisphere (half of the brain), reacts (orders) the movements of the
opposite side of the body (contralateral).
In the case of Joker’s mental illness, it is this part of his brain that has been
damaged by his childhood’s violence. In conclusion, a single damage cause to a
little part of our brain can affect our all life and behavior towards other people.
Every brain works differently. We have to be kind with every types of brain and
try to help them go through their pain.
