Sound Waves
Sound Waves
Objective
Educators help visitors observe how sound waves travel through water (and thus travel through air),
and then guide them in making a shaker.
To begin with:
1. Let the visitor strike the tuning fork against the palm of their hand, and listen to the sound.
2. Strike the tuning fork again, and then touch the surface of the water with the prongs. What’s
happening to the surface of the water?
3. Let the visitors play the sound matching game. Visitors will shake the tins, and try to guess
which sounds are matching. (The tins are color-coded on the bottom.)
To build a shaker:
1. Have the child (with a parent’s assistance) seal one end of the toilet paper tube with staples
or tape.
