LEARNING COMPETENCY:

● Describe how sound travels and the

characteristics of sound.
Sounds can tell us a lot about the world
around us.
Can you imagine how life would it be if there
were no sound? Would you enjoy living in a
soundless world?
Can you give sources of sound?
What is the video about?
Sound Energy
● a form of energy produced by a
the vibrations of objects or
vibrating objects
Vibrations
● the back-and-forth movements
of matter that make sounds
How does sound travel?
Vibrations from a moving object cause
the air particles around the object to
create sound waves.
Sound waves travel through all forms of
matter (solid, liquid, gas).

The matter that transports sound is

called the medium. (plural: media)
A sound wave moves outward in all
directions from the vibrating source.
The sound wave carries energy from particle
to particle through the medium until it
reaches the ear drum, which also vibrates.
The brain recognizes these vibrations as
sound made by a particular source.
Why can’t astronauts hear in space?
What three things are needed for
a sound to be heard?
1. a source of the sound
2. a medium for the sound to travel
through
3. a receiver of the sound
What are the characteristics
of sound?
1 CHARACTERISTIC OF SOUND

Sound can be
reflected.
1 CHARACTERISTIC OF SOUND

An echo reflects sound.

Sound waves bounce off

a surface and are sent
back toward the source.
Let’s think about it!
How is reflection of sound used in real life?

Reflection of sound is used in megaphones,

stethoscopes, loudspeakers, and sonar (sound
navigation and ranging).
2 CHARACTERISTIC OF SOUND

Sound can be
refracted.
2 CHARACTERISTIC OF SOUND

Sound travels faster

in solids than in
liquids; faster in
liquids than in gas.
Let’s try it!

Knock on your desk.

Is the sound loud?
Put your head on the desk, then knock again.
Is the sound louder?
3 CHARACTERISTIC OF SOUND

Sound can be
absorbed.
3 CHARACTERISTIC OF SOUND
When a sound wave hits an
object, part of the energy is
transferred to the particles
of the object.

Soft, porous materials like

carpets and curtains absorb
sound.
Let’s think about it!
How is absorption of sound used in real life?

Theaters and concert halls make use of materials that

absorb sound to improve how sound is transmitted in
large rooms.

Echoes are reduced by lining the walls with cork,

plastic foam, or adding curtains and carpets.
Today we have learned that…

1. Sound is a form of energy produced

by a vibrating object.
2. Sound travels through all forms of
matter.
3. For a sound to be heard there must be a
source of the sound, a medium, and a
receiver of the sound.
4. Sound has characteristics.
● It can be reflected.
● It can be refracted.
● It can be absorbed.
Identify the characteristic of sound shown in each
image.
1. Hearing sounds 2. Lining the walls of a
underwater movie house with foam
3. Hearing an echo
