This module will provide students with an understanding of the need
for effective communication in an emergency perspective. It will look
at both 

 The context in which, and how, communications can be


used effectively to support the resolution of an emergency
situation
 The needs of an organisation to manage public and
stakeholder perceptions of what has happened in a crisis
or emergency situation.

 
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

 Understand the drivers for communications on the part of


an organisation
 Understand the importance of stakeholders to an
organisation and how they might 

be analysed and prioritised

 Have a strong general understanding of the traditional and


shared media landscape 
 Identify communication priorities in managing a crisis
situation;
 Evaluate the communications impact and direction of a
crisis;
 Contribute effectively to framing their organisation’s
communications strategy;
 Develop and implement a crisis communications strategy;
 Develop and manage effective internal communications in
a crisis;
 Deal effectively with impromptu media queries and manage
effective relationships    

            with journalists;

 Communicate key messages in concise and effective


manner;
 Have an awareness of interview techniques.

Assignment Outline
 
The module is 100% Continuous Assessment (CA) with one piece of
assessed work.
 
Module participants are required to choose a crisis situation and
prepare and analysis in case study form that 

 Sets out the context for the organisation the subject of the
crisis
 Outlines the events that led to the crisis and the impact
arising
 Analyses the context for communications 
 Identifies the options considered for effective
communications 
 Sets out an assessment of the communications actions
taken and their impact
 Assess the success or otherwise of the actions taken.
 Sets out a view on the effectiveness or otherwise of those
options, and why, and considers what alternate cations
might have been taken, and why.

 
There is a detailed rubric posted on Loop that sets in more detail
that basis of the assessment.
 
Candidates are asked to identify the crisis event on which they plan
to do the case study on this form, which is also accessible though
Loop.  The deadline for confirmation of the case study choice is
17.00, Thursday 24 October.
 
Each candidate will be asked to give a five-minute outline of their
case and the key points being considered at the morning session of
30 November.
 
The submission date for the case study assignment will be 12 noon
on Monday 13     January 2020.
