It's the first day at school for these baby penguins at Chester Zoo, and just as children learn
their ABCs, these little ones are learning to swim and hunt.
"My name is Anne Morris, and I'm the lead keeper of the penguin section of Chester Zoo. Our
little gang here are all named after the Doctor Who theme, so we have a Doctor, a Dalek,
Tardis, Gallifrey and the little one is called Sonic. At the moment, the four big ones are already
starting to feed themselves in this little baby pool. We're trying to teach them this, so when they
go onto the main pool and they have to compete with the big group, they're gonna manage to
feed themselves. Little Sonic in here is a bit younger then the rest, so he hasn't quite got the
gist of it yet. So we're actually having to still hand feed him at the moment, but it won't be long
before he gets the gist of it as well, and then all of them will eventually go on to the main pool
with the main group.
These Humboldt penguins are an endangered South American species. Their arrival this
spring means the zoo now has a colony of over 40.
Difficult words: hunt (catch other animals to eat them), gist (skill), eventually (in the end),
endangered (there is very few of them), species (animal kind).

A zoo in England has something like a school for its little penguins. The little penguins are
helped to learn how to swim and hunt.
It is important for the little penguins to learn it because as they grow up, they will be moved to a
bigger pool with bigger penguins. There, the little penguins will have to compete with the others.
If they're not good at swimming and hunting, they will not catch anything.
This kind of penguins is called the Humboldt penguin. These endangered animals live in South
America and the zoo in England has over 40 of them.
Difficult words: hunt (catch other animals to eat them), compete (try to be better than the other
ones), endangered (there is not many of them and this kind of animal may die out).

There is a zoo in England. This zoo has a school for little penguins.
The little penguins must learn to swim and hunt. A woman teaches them. It is very important.
When they are bigger, they go to a bigger pool. There are other penguins too in the big pool.
The little penguins must fight for the food. It is not easy. If they cannot hunt, they cannot eat.
This kind of penguins lives in South America. There are not many penguins of this kind. People
try to save them.
Difficult words: hunt (catch fish and eat them), fight (use your power against somebody in a
difficult situation), kind (type).
