Task 2 : Role-play

SITUATION ONE

Your IPG is organising a forum entitled “The Qualities of a Good Malaysian”. You are a
panel member of this forum.

Who is a citizen? A citizen is a person who is a member of a particular country and

who has rights because of being born there or given rights or a person who lives in a
particular town or city. To be a good citizen, first you have to be a good person. By that I
mean that you have to be full of values, principles, ethics etc. when joining all these aspects
together you will find out that there is nothing else to be needed. There are some important
aspects for being a good citizen such as get a good education, law abiding person,
hardworking person, stay up-to-date on the news, patriotic person, tolerant person, healthy
person and so on. Now the forum regarding “The Qualities Of A Good Malaysian” will be
start.

Jia Teng, what is your opinion about this?

Being a Patriotic person

First of all, in my opinion, the more important for a Malaysian’s quality is being a
patriotic person. The patriotism which inside us is close to country’s independence matter.
Why? Because when we look around us today and see the physical and social development
that has rapidly taken place, we need to appreciate the freedom that we have been enjoying
in determining our own path and future. Compare this to a situation where we could not
make decisions on what was best for us as a nation but had to succumb to the will of a
colonial master. With this realisation, a sense of appreciation must be demonstrated in
various ways during the Merdeka Day celebration which is around the corner.

So, patriotism is generally defined as the feeling of love or devotion to one’s

country. When we claim to be patriotic, what do we actually mean?
We must realise that being patriotic should not be limited to only putting up a flag or merely
standing up for the national anthem. The spirit of patriotism entails a deeper reason for these
actions. Being patriotic also requires a feeling of wanting what is best for the nation and
doing things that would make the nation proud. So, when we hope for a gold medal in the
Olympics, likes Dato Lee Chong Wei, as we known he won in an international badminton
tournament. From this situation, we are actually taking pride in the country’s success. This
pride and hope are a form of patriotism, as is supporting the good qualities and ideals of the
country and striving to mitigate its negative ones. A patriotic spirit must be instilled in the
hearts and minds of all citizens. Serious efforts need to be taken to nurture the spirit of
patriotism especially among youths today. True Malaysians would always want the country
to remain peaceful and harmonious. Real Malaysians would ensure that the bond among
fellow citizens remains strong and intact. Malaysians from all walks of life should understand
that nurturing patriotism is not just the responsibility of the government of the day, but also a
collective endeavour of all who do it for the love of the country.

Now, let’s see the opinion from other panel, Rheena for being a hard-working
person towards a quality for a Malaysian.

patriotism

Being a hardworking person

In my opinion, hard work is one of the personalities that should be in each human.
First and foremost, as Malaysians we should have diligence in each and every activity,
action and work that we do in our daily lives. This is because we have the responsibility in
enhancing the development of our nation economically and politically. We as Malaysians
need to work hard to improve the quality of our education system too. Hard work is a vital
element that is a key to success because it is impossible to achieve the success without
hard work.

The value hard work should be instilled in each person especially youngsters. They
can ensure rapid development of the country if they work hard for their dreams. Youth have
the ability to exercise their full potential when they are young and energetic. Youth is that
period in which progressive thoughts shape the world we live in. Bill Gates, the founder of
Microsoft Corporation, is a living example. He had a revolutionary thought and he has
changed the world today. The Edison was working for 21 hours a day, and he sleeps only for
2 or 3 hours on the laboratory tables with his books as his pillow. As a consequence of his
hard work, he invented the light. Thus, every youngster should think innovatively and
creatively in order to make revolutions. According to our Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir
Mohamad, the most important things that must be followed by each Malaysian is diligence.
Although you are smart and you don’t read, you won’t succeed. Success is possible and
achievable if there is hard work even though you are not smart. In addition, when Malaysians
work hard to expand their horizon, they learn to be being a good valued person in their life.
Apart of that we can makes our country to be in highest rank over all the nations in education
aspect.
In education too, students must be taught to work hard for their dreams so that
they will be achieved. Teachers should identify the potential and capabilities of students to
develop them according to their interest. In accordance with our Prime Minister, he pointed
out that expertise comes from hard work in chasing the knowledge. In addition, he stated
that university students must nurture these values as they will bring success to one's efforts
to improve one's self, the people, and the country.

Moreover, as a responsible Malaysian, we need to hard work by doing some

businesses for our future. This is because we can earn money and gain profits from the
business if we work hard. As a person is hard working to enhance their business knowledge,
then he earns money and upgrade their life day by day. Malaysia is a multiracial country
where people from different races lives here such as Malays, Indians, Chinese and more.
Unlike those days, people start doing business regardless of race, career and religion. They
never miss any opportunity to do business in their life. So they always hard work and no
more a couch potato at home. This are some essential points that hardworking Malaysians
can do to become a good Malaysians.

Being a Law Abiding person

I agree with my panel members who said that patriotic and hardworking is
important qualities to be a good Malaysian. But being a law abiding person also important for
a good Malaysian.

In order for Malaysia to become as a country with peace and tranquillity, it need to
have a law abiding and disciplined society. Laws are made to be followed by everyone. Laws
and rules are made to bring justice to the society. Justice will bring peace and tranquility to
the society. These two are always interrelated. Our country has many rules that everyone
should follow to create a harmonious country. A law abiding Malaysian citizen will follow all
the rules and regulations the country authority has fixed.

There are many rules and laws that Malaysian citizens must obey which includes
actions like not throwing away garbage in public, respecting other religion customs and
beliefs, follow traffic rules and so on. Our country is a multiracial country. So, each individual
person must have respectful attitude towards each other especially during the festival
seasons. This is because in particular season, particular set of people will practice their
religious customs. The respect and kindness given to one another during festive seasons
help each other to celebrate their festivals with a great joy and fulfillment. In between this,
people should celebrate their festivals based on the rules such as playing firecrackers which
are permitted only, keeping sound volume of speakers at minimum at night without
disturbing others who not involved and so on. These types of consideration among
Malaysian people will never create any struggle for others because they obey rules
designated and give priority for others by respecting everyone.

We also cannot give bribery for the mistake we did. Bribery is the thing we
shouldn't do. By doing this kind of work the peace and tranquility of our country will be
affected. This is because particular authorities cannot do their work properly. For an
example, if a person give bribery to police officers for disobeying traffic rules, then these
policemen cannot do their job by putting fine or summon to the people. Meanwhile, it will
trigger them to expect the same thing to the others eventhough not every Malaysian citizen
is doing the same thing. Our country will never has these kind of problems because our
citizens will always obey the rules.

Being a Tolerant person

Tolerance is respect towards beliefs, but also demands respect for the individuals
who belong in the society. Tolerance is defined as the willingness of an individual to accept
other’s rights to be different and respecting without being judgmental.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir said: tolerance practised by all Malaysians is the
key to development and peace in the country.

For example, Malaysians have 3 main ethic and so on, but we are tolerance in the
country because we can accept and respect to other ethic’s festival. All Malaysians, can join
in a competition among different races, for instances, marathon or any festivals and
carnivals. We can see Indian Boys taking part in a tiger dance competition in conjunction
with Chinese New Year Festival. Chinese girl singing traditional Malaysia song in a
competition and Malay girl dancing Indian traditional dance.

During the lantern festival, a parade would be held and all the people can celebrate
it by carrying lanterns and walking around the city. When open house is held, all the people
would be invited without taking into account their races and religious. They may sit together
and have their meals while chatting with each other. All of these may strengthen the
relationship among Malaysians and raise unity and tolerance among themselves. Tolerance
is instilled through knowledge, openness, communication and freedom of thought.
Malaysia is a country with multi-religious and multi-ethnic communities, tolerance is
important. It is essential to bring the people together with a view to contributing to the
prosperity of the nation.

Conclusion:

Although there are many qualities to be a good Malaysian, but the most important quality
being a good Malaysian is become a patriotic person. When we are patriotic people, we will
started to love our country. Therefore, when you fall in love with your own country, only then
you will become a tolerant, law abiding and hardworking person.
