3. DISCUSSION ON RE WALL:
a) Around BH-A1 Location
Determination of Bearing Capacity
Based on the subsoil condition, use design cohesion C = 0.45 kg/sqcm &  = 0°
Nc = 5.14
Now, ultimate bearing capacity of soil = CNc = 4.5 x 5.14 = 23.13 t/sqm

Settlement calculation:
Width = 21.5m
Assuming one way load dispersion, load at the middle of layer-I, P = 1 x 21.5 /
(21.5+7) = 0.75 t/sqm for unit load at the surface and with 2V:1H trapezoidal load
distribution
Use G = 0.85, mvc = 0.0270 sqcm/kg, H = 14m
Hence settlement = Sc = 0.85 x 0.0270 x 0.75 x (14 x 100) cm  241 mm
Thus, even with unit applied load at surface the settlement is very high and cannot be
accepted. Hence, ground improvement is necessary and shall be design suitably to
match bearing capacity and settlement restrictions.

b) Around BH-A2 Location


Determination of Bearing Capacity
Based on the subsoil condition, use design cohesion C = 0.35 kg/sqcm &  = 0°
Corresponding Nc = 5.14
Now, ultimate bearing capacity of top soil = CNc = 3.5 x 5.14 = 17.99 t/sqm

Settlement calculation:
Width = 21.5m
Assuming one way load dispersion, load at the middle of layer-I, P = 1 x 21.5 /
(21.5+10.25) = 0.68 t/sqm for unit load at the surface and with 2V:1H trapezoidal load
distribution
Use G = 0.90, mvc = 0.0329 sqcm/kg, H = 20.50m
Hence settlement = Sc = 0.90 x 0.0329 x 0.68 x (20.50 x 100) cm  413 mm
Thus, even with unit applied load at surface the settlement is very high and cannot be
accepted. Hence, ground improvement is necessary and shall be design suitably to
match bearing capacity and settlement restrictions.
