Overview:

For my final project, I aim to create a music video that recreates

80s and 90s movies and appeals to a young target audience
around my age. I also aim to add some visual effects on top of my
music video, such as animated lines and 80s VHS style effects. I
have named my final project 'Nostalgia' because I want my
audience to be taken back to their childhood when they watched
these films, whether that be they were teenagers in the 90s, or
watched them as young teens in the 2010s.

My Aim:
The aim of my final project is to make a connection with the
audience in a different way to how I have achieved it before. I
want my audience to watch my final film to relive their childhood
memories, instead of feeling an intensity or sadness etc. like my
other projects. The 80s and 90s film era has always been a
passion of mine, specifically feel-good rom-coms, chick-flicks or
coming of age comedies, so I feel that I would be able to portray
the theme of nostalgia well. As well as my main theme being a
clear aim of my project, I also aim to create professional looking
visual effects to go over the top of my final film. This will appeal
to the younger part of my audience because most popular music
videos today rely on visual effects to appeal to their younger
audience.
My unique selling point of my music video will be a storyline
within all the movies being recreated. I will use a range of
characters and costumes to make my project as interesting and
fun as possible under the circumstances.

Target Audience:
My target audience is quite young despite the era the movies will
come from. This is because older audiences don't watch music
videos whereas younger ones do, as well as enjoying classic, feel-
good movies. My target audience will range from 14 to 24-year
olds with interests in both music and movies. There is no specific
gender I am aiming this at as both boys and girls watch these
older movies. To appeal to both genders, I will be sure to use a
range of different movies. To understand what movies my target
audience will be appealed to, I have sent out a survey and got a
range of responses. I will also follow this up with a focus group
soon, as well.

Context and Narrative:

For my new idea caused by the unpredictable circumstances the
coronavirus has put us in, I am having the whole music video shot
in my bedroom and some parts in other places of my house. I
have an idea incase lockdown is lifted but am sticking with this
idea just in case I cannot get any other cast members.
At the beginning of my music video, I will have an introduction
without music underneath it in the style of Ferris Bueller’s Day
Off. My character will talk about the circumstances we are in (the
real-life COVID-19) and what my character is doing to fill their
days. The context needed behind this music video is just what is
happening in the world right now.
The narrative of my music video is very easy to follow, it opens
with ‘Ferris Bueller’ explaining what is going on, and then when
the music starts, the character starts to recreate loads of different
80s and 90s movies and characters in their bedroom. For this
reason, I’m picking out certain shots and scenes instead of films
as a whole. I only have one actor (myself) unless lockdown is
lifted, so I must be creative with outfits and props. After all of the
films have been recreated and the song is coming to the end, I
will have an outro with the Ferris Bueller character so that the
music video comes round to a close and so that the storyline isn’t
lost.
Research:
There is a lot of research needed to go into my music video to
understand if I am using the right films. So far, I have looked at
existing music videos using the same technique as I am going to
try, and I have researched heavily into what films and scenes I
could use. I have sent out a survey to try and understand my
audience better and to see if I have forgotten about any movies,
scenes or characters. As well as this, I have looked into different
articles and box office figures to understand what films were the
most popular at the time, compared to today. I will continue my
research into 80s and 90s films by continuously looking at
YouTube clips, watching films, reading online articles and reading
non-fiction books. I will also carry out a focus group later on in my
project to see if my idea will appeal to my audience.
To research into my visual effects, I am looking at existing music
videos and looking at YouTube tutorials. I will also be doing test-
editing with clips I already have or with test shoot footage and
send it out to my audience to get an opinion.

Characters:
The only character in my music video, is a teenage girl (myself),
however the girl will recreate many different characters from the
different 80s and 90s movies. It is essential for my character
recreations to be realistic and close for my final project, because
otherwise, the music video is just a girl dancing in her room. I am
going to focus mainly on costume and, with my chosen
characters, study their traits so that when I play myself in my
bedroom, I can get the characters everyone loves right.
