Women in Indian society are considered as Secondary or inferior since time immemorial. She is
the constant victim of oppression, subjugation, injustice, discrimination, bias in this male
dominated society. From the ancient times when women were the sufferers of abusive practices
like Sati pratha, child marriage, Pardha system, Dasi pratha till today when women are subject to
rape, acid attacks, domestic violence their status hasn’t change much. Even though women are
educated today but they are still looked down with contempt and disdain. In most cases they are
educated just to be a better prospect for marriage. Their status in otherwise progressive Indian
society is reduced to an unpaid maid, a selfless caretaker and a lifeless robot to satiate men’s
needs. Women are reduced to artifacts which are there just to look pretty with no aspirations or
dreams of her own. A good woman is regarded as the one who follows the patriarchs blindly and
has a ‘Yes Sir’ attitude towards the patriarchal demands. Men and Women are the two wheels of
a cart named life and for the smooth functioning of it, balance between them is necessary. But
the male dominated society don’t think of women as equal and it hammers their male ego to put
the woman on same pedestal as they put themselves. Women are complete in themselves and
they are the source of new life. They adroitly perform the role of a mother, wife, daughter and
sister but society tends to forget that she is more than a womb and before anything else is a
human being. This paper attempts to analyze the status of women in India.

aggregate populace With the advancement of time, the truth has now been perceived that without
guaranteeing women development, the national development can't be accomplished. In every

their fathers, with not very many legitimate rights,to having the same political rights and the
majority of an indistinguishable economic rights from men.
