10m AIR RIFLE SHOOTING

10 meter air rifle is an International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF)

shooting event, shot over a distance of 10 metres (10.94 yards) from
a standing position with a 4.5 mm (0.177 in) calibre air rifle with a
maximum weight of 5.5 kg (12.13 lb).
The use of specialized clothing is allowed to improve the stability of the
shooting position and prevent chronic back injury which can be caused
by the asymmetric offset load on the spine when the rifle is held in
position. It is one of the ISSF-governed shooting events included in
the Olympic games.
Shots are fired from the standing position only, as opposed to some
other airgun shooting disciplines such as for three positions (popular in
the United States) or in disabled sports.
The major competitions are the Olympic Games every four years and
the ISSF World Shooting Championships every four years (the Games
and the Championships are held two years apart). In addition, the event
is included in the ISSF World Cup series, the ISSF World Cup Final, ,
and in many other international and national competitions.
It is an indoor sport. In many clubs and ranges, electronic targets are
now being used instead of the traditional paper targets.
The use of specialized clothing equipment is allowed to improve stability
of the shooting positions.

 Qualification round:

During the qualification round every athlete has to fire 60 shots within a
total of 1 hours and 15 minutes.
The qualification score is made of decimal points, with the maximum
score per shot being 10.9 points because of an additional set of 10 rings
within the tenth circle that increase the score of 0.1 points as it
approaches the center of the target. The maximum score of the
qualification round being 654.0 points.

Final round:
The top eight athletes from the qualification phase advance to the final
match, where they can shoot up to 24 final shots.
The final score is made of decimal points, with the maximum score per
shot being 10.9 points and the maximum score of the final round
being 261.6 points. The finalists start the match with zero points: no
qualification score is carried into the final round.
The final starts with two series of five shots, each of them fired
within 250 seconds; they are followed by 14 single shots fired on
command and within 50 seconds. After the 12th shot, the athlete with
the lowest score is eliminated in 8th position; the following eliminations
are determined every two shots, until the gold and silver medallists are
decided by the 24th and conclusive shot.
If there is a tie for the lowest ranking athlete to be eliminated, the tie will
be broken by one or more additional shoot-off shots.

FABRIC AND DESIGN OF THE RIFLE

RIFLE SHOOTING COSTUME

Mostly ,for the jacket and trousers, they use Stiff PVC Material which is
combined of Leather & Canvas. PVC Material help to maintain stiffness
& thickness level in any weather condition. And also ,they are some
cases in which they use polyester and leather ;polyester and velon(vinyl
tafetta); cotton and leather for the better results.

USES WHEN DIFFERENT KINDS OF FIBRES ARE

BLENDED :

CASE -1
Material:
60% cotton, 40% leather.

Lining:
100% cotton.

The combined leather/canvas shooting jacket combines all the desirable

and conceivable details such as:

 Highest possible stability by relaxed posture.

 Ultimate adaptability for the positions: "prone-standing-kneeling" by
use of stylised cutting techniques.
 Top Grip padding on elbow and shoulder for a better Grip
 Back-piece sewn lengthwise for relaxing of the spine
 Shoulder cut made of suede leather for more comfort in the
different positions.
 Front/top-side of sleeve in rough leather

CASE -2
Material:
85% Polyester , 15% PU (Velon)

Lining:
85 % Polyester tissue, 15 % cotton

A newly developed synthetic fibre is used instead of the usual canvas.

This being a technical fibre, it has the following characteristics:

 actively respiring,
 non-tear fabric,
 porous,
 washable and thermo-fixed

which do not change the wearing comfort during light- and temperature
fluctuations. In order to benefit fully from the effect of this material, the
lining is also made from this type of tissue and only in very few spots
cotton is used.

PROBLEMS FACED BY MY CLIENT:

1. When he wears the rifle shooting costume, he has to wear
the nylon skin tight to avoid getting skin rashes but
because of that, he feels suffocated after an 1 hour.

2. He sweats a lot when he wears it for the competition and

sometimes ,it just sticks to the skin. So, it’s stopping him to
move the hand freely.

3. He feels that the dress is too heavy because of canvas

and leather.

4. As the dress should be washed only once or twice in a

year, he cannot avoid the smell from the dress.
SOLUTIONS:
1. As the nylon cause skin irritation, I suggest that a blend of
polyester(95%) and lycra(5%) can avoid the irritation.

2. A)For the sweat problem:

“Shape memory polymers” material can remember and

retain its shape and is able to sense changes in the
surroundings environment; and can evaluate
intelligently and control its response to ensure the
highest level of comfort. This polymer is also unique as
the temperature at which micro-Brownian motion
begins can be freely specified. This means that the
activation point can be set to match the environmental
conditions in which a garment is likely to be worn.
B)For the free movement of hand:

Raglan sleeves can be used because  it gives

greater movement to the wearer, instead of the usual sleeve
head which was prefixed.

3. I am thinking a design in which leather(40%) ,cotton(30%)

and, elastomer(30%) are used to make the fabric light weight
and also keeping its own properties.
4. Microencapsulation is the technique where small solid
particles, liquid droplets, or minute bubbles of gas are
coated, and when certain amount or pressure is exerted or
the surface is scratched, it releases the compounds inside
the capsules.

The application of the technique for fragrance releases

however is of high demand.

The fragrance produced by this process lasts for maximum 5

years and 25 washes.

Currently microencapsulation is used in textiles for anti-

bacterial treatments, UV protection, for moisturizing and skin
treatments, body temperature regulation, repellence, and for
perfume or fragrance releases.

MY DESIGN:
Material:
40% leather, 30% elastomer, 30% cotton

The back part is made from a firm but flexible elastomer which is fixed
onto a cotton basis.

 Highest possible stability by relaxed posture.

 Ultimate adaptability for the positions: prone-standing-kneeling by
use of stylised cutting techniques.
 Top Grip padding on elbow and shoulder for a better grip.
 Back-piece sewn lengthwise for relaxing of the spine.
 Shoulder cut made of suede leather for more comfort in different
positions.
 Front/top-side of sleeve in smooth leather, bottom top-side in
suede leather.
 Adjustable shoulder strap allow controlled creasing for the best fit
of the butt plate.
In my design, I will use 40% leather, 30% elastomer and 30% cotton for
the fabric and for the lining , I will use 100% cotton. The reason why I
want to use these fibres is :

i. Leather is used for giving the grip at the shoulder ,knee, and
elbow. I will use suede leather which is napped finished which
which provides warmth because of the insulative air cells in the
nap. The thicker the nap, the more air cells, and the warmer the
fabric.

ii. Elastomer possess extremely high elongations at the break and

that recover fully and rapidly from high elongations up to their
breaking point.

iii. Cotton can withstand heat and also,is prized for its comfort, ,
and affordability and is ideal .
FINISHES USED IN MAKING RIFLE SHOOTING
GARMENT:

i. Anti-microbial finish
ii. Anti- bacterial finish
iii. Napped finish
iv. Waterproof finish
v. Anti-static finish
