Course Objectives
 To study the basics of electronics, emission controls and its importance in environment.
 To study the various sensors and actuators used in automobiles for improving fuel economy and
emission control
 To study about various blocks of control units used for control of fuel, ignition and exhaust
systems

b. Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyse complex engineering
problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and
engineering sciences.
e. Modern Tool Usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern
engineering and IT tools including prediction and modelling to complex engineering activities with an
understanding of the limitations.
m. Analyze, design and develop electro mechanical system using contemporary tools

mechanical, control systems, robotics, drives and automation.

1. classify the different types of emission laws and technology used in India and Europe in order to
reduce air pollution.
2. Recall the fundamental components of an internal combustion engine and to summarize the need
for advanced ignition and injection systems.
3. Identify the use of sensors and equipment for measuring mechanical quantities, temperature and
appropriate actuatorscomfort and safety systems in automobiles
4. summarize the function and working of engine control system towards the efficiency of engine
management system.
5. Interpret the requirement for different technologies used to improve the comfort and safety
aspects of modern vehicles.

UNIT I 8 Hours
INTRODUCTION
Evolution of electronics in automobiles - emission laws - introduction to Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro
IV, Euro V standards - Equivalent Bharat Standards. Charging systems: Working and design of charging
circuit diagram - Alternators - Requirements of starting system - Starter motors and starter circuits.

UNIT II 10 Hours
IGNITION AND INJECTION SYSTEM
Ignition systems: Ignition fundamentals - Electronic ignition systems - Programmed Ignition -
Distribution less ignition - Direct ignition - Spark Plugs. Electronic fuel Control: Basics of combustion -
Engine fueling and exhaust emissions - Electronic control of carburetion - Petrol fuel injection - Diesel
fuel injection.

UNIT III 7 Hours


SENSORS AND ACTUATORS
Working principle and characteristics of Airflow rate, Engine crankshaft angular position, Hall effect,
Throttle angle, temperature, exhaust gas oxygen sensors - study of fuel injector, exhaust gas re-circulation
actuators, stepper motor actuator, vacuum operated actuator.

UNIT IV 10 Hours
ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM
Control modes for fuel control - Engine control subsystems - Ignition control methodologies - Different
ECU's used in the engine management - block diagram of the engine management system. In vehicle
networks: CAN standard, format of CAN standard - Diagnostics systems in modern automobiles.

UNIT V 10 Hours
CHASSIS AND SAFETY SYSTEM
Traction control system - Cruise control system - Electronic control of automatic transmission - Anti-lock
braking system - Electronic suspension system - Working of airbag and role of MEMS in airbag systems -
Centralized door locking system - Climate control of cars.
