Job: Civil Engineer


Job Description (What type of work do you do?)
• design, construct, supervise, operate, and maintain construction projects and systems including
buildings, warehouses, systems for water supply and sewage treatment
• Calculates cost and determines feasibility of project based on analysis of collected data, applying
knowledge and techniques of engineering, and advanced mathematics.
• Usually works 8 hours a day from Monday to Saturday
• Drives to different sites/ project areas every day to inspect construction site, monitor progress, and
ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction and safety standards
Typical Work Day:
• 9am-5pm (lunch inside car)
• Visits 4-5 sites per day

• Accident/Safety hazards
• Falls from elevated surfaces/levels
• Slip, trip, or fall on high level
• Injury as a result of collapse of an excavation, trench, floor or wall of a building or of an auxiliary
structure; collapse/buckling of components in a structure that is being built
• Injury caused by falling objects, by stepping on sharp objects, and by impact and collision with
sharp or protruding objects
• Risk of traffic accidents, when working simultaneously on numerous sites, requiring much
additional driving
• Physical Hazards
• Exposure to strong and continuous noise in work areas
• Exposure to strong solar radiation and extreme heat
• Chemical Hazards
• Exposure to noxious dust, rust, and welding sparks when staying on the work site
• Dermatitis due to irritating and allergenic materials such as cement dust
• Biological Hazards
• Potential exposure to infectious diseases, like influenza or COVID-19, due to close contact with
construction workers
• Possible contact with insects that may cause diseases such as dengue
• Ergonomic Hazards
• Musculoskeletal injuries (prolonged driving due to multiple site visits)
Control Measures (What have/has you/your company been doing to prevent these accidents to happen or
to protect you and your co-workers from hazardous events?)
• All work surfaces are required to have proper precautions installed to prevent collapse/breakage and
prevent people or objects from falling out
• Cavities, openings, and open pits are required to be securely fenced with caution tapes
• We are required to wear safety shoes, hard hats, and protective hearing devices (PPEs)
• Work surfaces, floors, footpaths and similar passages should be free from protruding nails, binding
wires, and all other obstacles

Compliance
• Doesn't wear PPE

Health effects (Do you have any health problems? Are your symptoms different when you’re at work and
at home?)
• Increased exposure to dust may have caused acute bronchitis (consulted a physician due to frequent
cough)
• Eating drive-thru fast food daily increased his cholesterol levels
• Sometimes experiences headache and shortness of breath
• Stress from work

Health services (Has your company been helping you with your work-related health problems? How are
they helping?)
• Monthly CBC exam
• No other check-ups/consultations done, no advice for check up
• First aider available in case of any injuries
