Quick Start Guide & Materials

hello.. and welcome to this Acrylic Painting course!

This ‘Absolute Beginners Acrylic Painting Course’ will show you how get started
with Acrylics and learn all the essential information you need.

Working through these simple step-by-step tutorials, you’ll be able to create some
great paintings - even if you’re an absolute beginner!

How to use this course

When you purchase the course, you will receive an email that includes a link to all
the video lessons on the course.

Important: You then have to download and save the Video Lessons onto your
home computer.
Once you have saved the files, you can watch them as many times as you like,
whenever you like – forever!

All downloaded?

If yes, brilliant stuff! Start at Step 1 below.

If you’re having any problems downloading click here to my Technical FAQ’s page
where there is a video and a step-by-step guide to troubleshooting and guide for
downloading to ipads.
Step 1. Watch A Welcome from Will where I’ll explain what we’ll cover in the
course and in Lesson 1 introduce you to all the materials I use.

Step 2. Watch the rest of the video lessons and enjoy!

The 8 videos run chronologically, for a full material list see below.

There is also a PDF called ‘Your Painting Downloads - PDF’ that contains all the
reference images you will need for the tutorials, so you can print that out and work
alongside it.

Each image fits onto an A4 piece of paper - the better quality the paper, the more
accurate the colours will be. This is handy to have to refer to, as you watch the
videos. My copy was printed on a Photo Quality Semi-Gloss paper (Epson).

Your print out colours may vary from the colours you see on the videos but don’t
worry too much, as long as you colour match to your reference print out, you will
get a good result.

Note: Laminating any of the print outs can be handy if you’re having troubles
matching your colours, just paint a swatch of your mixed paint colour onto the
laminated image and you can easily see how close or far out your mix is.

Then you can scrape off the swatch of paint with the palette knife and keep
checking until your mix is right.

Brushes:

This is the list for all 4 acrylic demonstrations.

• Rosemary & Co Series 344 Designer Rounds Golden Synthetic - size 4

(You could also use a Sable small round)
• Isabey Isacryl Filbert - size 6

Decorators Brush - 1 1/2 - 2 inch

Brush Cleaner - Masters Brush Cleaner

Stay-wet Palette - Daler Rowney A3

When working with acrylics the paints can dry very quickly so a stay wet palette
can be invaluable to keep the paint wetter for longer.

Stay wet palette’s come in a small and large size, I always prefer the larger size so
you have more space to work in.

Tear-Off Palette - Daler Rowney A3 tear-off palette.

The most common tear-off palettes’s are white, which can be very handy when
glazing colours.
However, you can also get grey palettes, working on a grey palette makes it easier
to judge your skin tones.

Supports:

Pre-primed cotton canvas or canvas board - For all the demonstrations I use a
pre-primed cotton canvas.

• Lesson 3 Simple Landscape Painting - I demonstrate on a 12 x 12 inch canvas

• Lesson 5 Seascape Painting - I demonstrate on a 8 x 13 inch canvas
• Lesson 6 Textured Sunset Painting - I demonstrate on a 8 x 10 inch canvas
• Lesson 7 Final Project Still life Painting - I demonstrate on a 8 x 10 inch canvas

A Palette Knife with a cranked handle - I use a number 45 from RGM

Water Spray or Mister - You could use a plant mister.

Kitchen Roll (paper towel)
Easel - I use a standing easel called an H easel, however a table easel or angled
desk would work just as well.

A pot of clean water

When working with acrylics your painting water can be very muddy, very quickly.
So make sure to remember to keep regularly replacing it. I often use 2 pots, one
larger pot for cleaning out the pigments from the brush and one smaller dipper pot
for just dipping into when you want to add water to your mixture.

Pencil - 3B or softish pencil for sketching out our painting.

Mediums - In Lesson 2 I show you various mediums and have listed them below,
however, throughout the demonstrations on this course I use water to dilute my
paints.

N.B. The only mediums I use in the painting demos are Extra Heavy Gel
(Matte) in Lesson 6 and Soft Gel (Gloss) on the Final Project Lesson 7 when I
use it as an isolation coat for protection.

• Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Gloss) - perfect for thin glazes of paint and holds an even
paint film
• Clear Tar Gel - for more decorative dripping effects and has a tar-like flow to it.
• Regular Gel (Gloss) - most similar to the binder used in Heavy Body Paints, can
be mixed with your paints to make them go further.
• Soft Gel (Gloss) - similar to the Regular Gel but softer in consistency.
• Extra Heavy Gel (Matte) - holds firm peaks, great for raised textural work.
• Course Pumice Gel - contains a sand-like pumice stone quality adds a gritty
texture to your paints.

Paints:
This is the list for all 4 acrylic demonstrations.

You don't have to use the brands I use but just be aware that all paint
manufacturers differ slightly in intensity and hue, as I demonstrate in the course.
