I) Multiplication by addition

This is largely used for single digit with two digit multiplications.

For example 6 x53 = 6 x (50+3) = 6x5x10 + 6x3= 300+18=318

Basic idea is to under stand that this entire multiplication was a series of single digit
multiplication and subsequent addition. We don’t need any technique for single digit
multiplication. In this case we all know that 6x5=30 and 6x3=18. Multiplication with 10 is
just putting a 0 at the end. So 30 becomes a 300 and 18 is to be added

The entire challenge in doing mentally is to follow the sequence and remember the numbers.

For example 7 x 46= 7x(40+6)= 280+42= 322

8x 82= 720+16= 736

4 x 68= 240 + 32= 272

If your addition is good then these calculations must be done mentally within 5 seconds

If we extend this idea to 2 digit numbers, say 13 x 54= 54 x (10+3) = 540 + 162= 702

Again depending on your comfort level with mental calculation you may train yourself to do
this mentally or use pen and paper.

But for single digit with two digit multiplication this method definitely works
