What is classification?
The act, process, or result of classifying. A category or class. Biology The
systematic grouping of organisms into categories on the basis of
evolutionary or structural relationships between them
Uses of classification in biology:
1. Classification is needed for convenient study of living organisms.
2. It is necessary for knowing the different varieties of organisms.
3. It helps in the correct identification of various organisms.
4. It helps to know the origin and evolution of organisms.
5. It helps to determine the exact position of the organism in the classification.
6. It helps to develop phylogenetic relation between different groups of
organisms.

Explanation:
Biological classification is the process by which scientists group
living organisms. Organisms are classified based on how similar
they are. Historically, similarity was determined by examining the
physical characteristics of an organism but modern classification
uses a variety of techniques including genetic analysis.
Organisms are classified according to a system of seven ranks:
 Kingdom
 Phylum
 Class
 Order
 Family
 Genus
 Species
For example, the honey bee (Apis mellifera) would be classified in
the following way:
 Kingdom = Animalia
 Phylum = Arthropoda

 Class = Insecta
 Order = Hymenoptera
 Family = Apidae
 Genus = Apis
 Species = Apis mellifera
Species names are always written including the Genus in either
full or abbreviated, for example, Apis mellifera or A. mellifera
respectively.

What is taxonomy?
Taxonomy is the process of naming and classifying things such as animals
and plants into groups within a larger system, according to their similarities
and differences.

Uses of taxonomy in biology?

 It helps to ascertain the number of living beings on Earth. More than
one million of species of plants and animals have been discovered and
classified so far.
 It aims to classify the living organisms. Millions of organisms are
classified scientifically in categories, which helps to have a better
understanding.
 It helps us to get an idea of the traits present in plants and animals.
 It gives an idea of the order of the physical development.
 It gives an idea of local fauna and flora, thus helping us to distinguish
the endemic species.

What is systematics?
systematics is the study and classification of living things; in other words, grouping
organisms based on a set of rules (or system).

Uses of systematics in biology:

1.Biosystematics gives us a vivid picture of the existing organic
biodiversity of our earth.
2. It provides much of the information permitting a reconstruction
of the phylogeny of the life.
3. It reveals numerous evolutionary phenomena and thus makes
them available for casual study by the other branches of biology.
4.It supplies, almost exclusively, the information needed for entire
branches of biology.
5.It is indispensable in the study of ecologically and medically
important organisms.

Explanation:
stages in taxonomy:
There are several stages of taxonomy such as:-
1. Alpha taxonomy:- In this stage species are identified and characterized
on the basis of gross morphological features.
2.Beta taxonomy:- In this stage species are arranged from lower to higher
categories, i.e., hierherarchic system of classification.
3.Gamma taxonomy:- In this stage intraspecific differences and
evolutionary history are studied.
