Classification,systematics,and Taxonomy
Roll no : B1F17BSZL0054
What is classification?
The act, process, or result of classifying. A category or class. Biology The
systematic grouping of organisms into categories on the basis of
evolutionary or structural relationships between them
Uses of classification in biology:
1. Classification is needed for convenient study of living organisms.
2. It is necessary for knowing the different varieties of organisms.
3. It helps in the correct identification of various organisms.
4. It helps to know the origin and evolution of organisms.
5. It helps to determine the exact position of the organism in the classification.
6. It helps to develop phylogenetic relation between different groups of
organisms.
Explanation:
Biological classification is the process by which scientists group
living organisms. Organisms are classified based on how similar
they are. Historically, similarity was determined by examining the
physical characteristics of an organism but modern classification
uses a variety of techniques including genetic analysis.
Organisms are classified according to a system of seven ranks:
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
For example, the honey bee (Apis mellifera) would be classified in
the following way:
Kingdom = Animalia
Phylum = Arthropoda
Class = Insecta
Order = Hymenoptera
Family = Apidae
Genus = Apis
Species = Apis mellifera
Species names are always written including the Genus in either
full or abbreviated, for example, Apis mellifera or A. mellifera
respectively.
What is taxonomy?
Taxonomy is the process of naming and classifying things such as animals
and plants into groups within a larger system, according to their similarities
and differences.
What is systematics?
systematics is the study and classification of living things; in other words, grouping
organisms based on a set of rules (or system).
Explanation:
stages in taxonomy:
There are several stages of taxonomy such as:-
1. Alpha taxonomy:- In this stage species are identified and characterized
on the basis of gross morphological features.
2.Beta taxonomy:- In this stage species are arranged from lower to higher
categories, i.e., hierherarchic system of classification.
3.Gamma taxonomy:- In this stage intraspecific differences and
evolutionary history are studied.
