Eulogy

Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Pope Gregory 1 also known as
Gregory the great. I would like to start by saying that Mr. Gregory was well known for his writings and
his instigating adventures with the first recorded scale mission from Rome. Greg was born in 540 AD and
died 604 AD. He was born to Gordianus (father) and saint Silvia (mother). During his life he encountered
many things. He once said "we make idols of our concepts, but wisdom is born of wonder". I was asked
to give this eulogy because I always knew he was different. He became Pope in 590 and was a great
reformer. His epithet (nickname) ; the great was given to him to reflect his status as a writer and ruler.
He came up during rough times. The surrounding cities were declining. During that time I remember well
because the plaque had depopulated the towns and also during the wake of emperor's Justinian's
conquest in Italy. Later on in life Gregory fought against these corruptions. He earned his place in
society. It was a grand place at that. Greg and his family was centered around religion. His conversion to
monastic life wasn't sudden it was an ongoing life decision. During all of the years I associated with him I
never thought bad of him. He was always respectable and honest and trying to do better for his and
others lives.
