WEDGES
Wedges are another simple machine that use an inclined plane as their
foundation. A wedge is the sharp edge of an inclined plane and can be used for a
number of purposes. Cheese graters, knives, forks and vegetable peelers all use sharp
wedges shave and to cut food. Metal nails, axes, letter openers, and push pins are also
examples of this type of simple machine.
SCREWS
A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around an axis. Screws make work easier
by raising and lowering objects, as well as holding them. Aside from metal screws, this
machine is also part of jar lids, light bulbs, bottle openers and drills.
LEVERS
A pulley is a simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower
or move a load. An example of a simple pulley in use is shown in the image. The bucket
of water is being lifted from the well. The object to be lifted is tied to the end of a rope,
and the force is applied to the other end of the rope by a person pulling the rope
downwards. This force turns the wheel with the rope and the load is pulled upwards at
the other end.
Like a lever, a wheel works by rotating around a fulcrum; in this case, the axle.
Toys, cars, fans and fishing reels all use wheels and axles. Door hinges are an example of
this device--the round part of the hinge is an elongated wheel. On doors, the side
connected to door and the side connected to the wall have multiple wheels which rotate
around a common axle.
