Executive Summary
In order to fully understand the attitudes of parents related to their child’s educational
experience at Timpanogos Elementary school, we created and distributed a questionnaire to
Timpanogos Elementary School parents through Principal Rawlins’ email system. We received
115 responses, and our main findings are summarized as follows:
● 76% of parents report that they are “excited,” “proud,” or “happy” that their child attends
Timpanogos Elementary School
● The two main factors for which parents chose Timpanogos are geographical location
(81%) and the dual language immersion program (57%)
● 92% of parents reported that “a safe environment” was either extremely important or very
important in a school. 82% strongly agree or agree that their child is safe at school.
● 97.11% of the parents agree that a high quality education is very or extremely important
for their child’s experience at school, and 82.69% agree or strongly agree that their child
is receiving a high quality education.
● 95% of parents agreed that teachers care about their children, 88% agreed that office staff
members care about their children, and 93% agree that their child enjoys attending
Timpanogos Elementary School.
Additional research could be completed in the area of safety. Parents made it very clear to
us that safety was important to them, but we did not collect any data on what “safe” means to
them. We are not sure if safety means protection from bullies or protection from outside threats.
This could be clarified through additional research. Additional research could also be conducted
to reach diverse demographic groups. The majority of our respondents were Caucasian and
female. Additional research could study the attitudes of the diverse demographic groups at
Timpanogos Elementary.

Introduction
Timpanogos Elementary school is located in the south-west end of Provo, Utah.
Timpanogos Elementary school initially opened in 1892, however the building has been rebuilt
and updated three times to date. Our client, Principle Carrie Rawlins expressed her concerns
about the reputation of the school. 46% of the students are considered english language learners
and 86% of the students are considered to be impoverished. Based upon the high percentage of
spanish speaking students, Timpanogos offers a two-way dual immersion program that allows
spanish speaking children to learn english and english speaking children to learn spanish. Our
team built a survey that addressed the feelings and concerns of the parents and teachers of the
school. This data will help our client to find the causation and solutions to the negative stigma of
Timpanogos Elementary School.

Situation Analysis
Timpanogos Elementary School is a two-way dual immersion school struggling with
possible stigmas surrounding it. The client wants to learn more about where the stigmas are
coming from and how the school is perceived. The elementary school overcomes their
shortcomings by focusing on the positives and want to exemplify this to the community in Provo.
Timpanogos Elementary School is a Title One school due to the free breakfast and lunch
provided to the students daily, and the school’s state test scores have no effect on this label. In
fact, the school is ranked a “C” school within the state of Utah. Most students of Timpanogos
come from families where both parents work. These students are far more worried about taking
care of their younger siblings and “adult” problems rather than having a focus on their school
work. The students live a completely different life compared to other students in schools in the
city of Provo, but Timpanogos Elementary School wants to disbar and move past the stigmas.

Method
We administered a quantitative survey to Timpanogos Elementary School parents and
analyzed the data we collected. Our team distributed an online questionnaire via email to parents
through Principal Rawlins’ email system. We administered the survey in both English and
Spanish so that parents of all backgrounds could respond and share their thoughts. The data was
collected and reported in the form of a presentation including a slide deck and this written report.

Results
We targeted our survey towards the parents of Timpanogos Elementary School students. We
wanted to learn more about the assumed stigma surrounding the title one school. Our team
framed this survey around these three specific questions:

4
1) How do parents of Timpanogos Elementary School feel about the education offered by
the school?
2) What are the strongest factors that contribute to parents’ feelings about the school?
3) What can be done to fix and address the feelings parents have?

The following findings will be framed around the three questions above.

How do parents of Timpanogos Elementary School feel about the education offered by the
school?

Quality of education is an important aspect of any school. For the Timpanogos

Elementary School parents the quality of education is valued. 97.11% of the parents agree that a
high quality education is very and extremely important for their child’s experience at school. The
parents of Timpanogos Elementary School have quite a positive feeling towards the education
offered by the school. In the survey, parents were questioned if they agreed that their child(ren)
is receiving a high quality education. Overwhelmingly, the response was 82.69% agree or
strongly agree that their child is receiving a high quality education. To receive high quality
education, it is important that those teaching the material are qualified professionals with the
students’ best interests. 97.11% of the parents agree or strongly agree that the Timpanogos
Elementary School teachers are qualified professionals.

What are the strongest factors that contribute to parents’ feelings about the school?

Parents feel that the quality of education, a safe environment, that their child(ren) will be
cared for while they are working, building social skills, and the language learning opportunities
are the main factors for how they feel about the school. The school having a safe environment
was 100% very to extremely important to all parents. If the parents know their child is safe, they
will have positive feelings about their child attending Timpanogos Elementary School. As
previously mentioned, a high quality education is very to extremely important to 97.11% of the
parents. Once again, if the parents know their child is given a quality education, the feelings
towards Timpanogos Elementary School. From the results, many parents seem to work while
their child(ren) is in school. 80.39% of the parents feel it is very to extremely important that they
know their child(ren) is cared for while they are at work. The interactions children have while at
school aids them in learning social skills. The majority of parents (91.26%) of Timpanogos
Elementary School feel it is very to extremely important for their child(ren) to build social skills.
Timpanogos Elementary School is a dual-immersion school, as mentioned above and 77.67% of
the parents feel that this language learning opportunity is very to extremely important. Providing
these factors and making the parents aware of them happening will aid in a positive influence on
them and their opinion of Timpanogos.

5
What can be done to fix and address the feelings parents have?

From the results overall, the parents have a positive feeling that their child(ren) attend
Timpanogos Elementary School. 49% of the parents are happy that their child(ren) attend
Timpanogos, 17% are excited, and 14% are proud. Happy, excited, and proud all are positive
feelings. Communicating with the parents about all the good Timpanogos Elementary School
does is important. The parents prefer email and text messages as the main point of contact.
30.58% of the parents responded that the dual immersion program was the main reason their
child(ren) attends Timpanogos. Highlighting this factor can create a better stigma to show the
diversity and the great things that come from diversity in the school.

Conclusions/Recommendations
We found that parents have generally positive attitudes when it relates to their child’s
experience at Timpanogos Elementary School. Most parents (76%) say that they are happy,
proud, or excited that their child attends the school. Most parents also agree that their child
enjoys their experience at Timpanogos. Based on these results, we did not find evidence of a
negative stigma associated with the school’s academic reputation or Title 1 designation. 50% of
parents reported that standardized test scores were “moderately important” or “very important”
when choosing a school for their child. They prioritized school safety and a quality educational
experience. Parents generally agreed that Timpanogos elementary school offered a safe
environment and a high quality education.

For further research we would recommend a few things, the first being to find a way to
better survey the Hispanic and other ethnic populations. 70% of our respondents considered
themselves “white” and while these responses are valuable we wished to know more about the
Hispanic population and their opinions about Timpanogos Elementary School.

Most respondents are also female, which makes sense; most mothers tend to be the ones
who respond to emails about their children. We would recommend finding a way to survey the
male population of parents since 72% of respondents said they were female.

More research could also be completed to understand parent definitions of safety. Our
respondents made it very clear that safety was important to them, but we did not allow them to
specify whether they meant safety from other students or from external threats. Further research
could clarify the safety concerns of these parents

This blue chart shows the length of residence in Provo divided by ethnicity, showing that most
respondents saying they are white have lived there very long, whereas those of other ethnicities
haven’t lived there long at all.

Back pack flyers seem to be the most common way that teachers communicate, but it is the
slowest way for me to get the information. I have one daughter that has multiple back packs
and she loses them all the time. I have missed several things I would have liked to know
about and it would have been helpful to hear about the event in another way besides back
pack flyers. I definitely prefer multiple notifications.
