MATERIAL SAFETY DATA All staff
SHEET (MSDS)
1. PURPOSE
1.1 A Material Safety Data Sheet supplies detailed information on a chemical and its Hazards.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 The Material Safety Data Sheet is a detailed information bulletin prepared by the manufacturer or
importer of a chemical. MSDS sheets describe the properties of chemicals to aid the laboratory in
the proper identification, handling, storage and waste disposal practices. This information should be
used to prepare employees for handling chemicals routinely as well as during emergency situations.
Using the manufacturer's MSDS sheets as a reference, the Laboratory has prepared and provides a
log of simplified MSDS sheets which contain all the required information from the manufacturer's
MSDS sheet in a precise, organized format.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1.All level laboratory staff
4. POLICY
4.1. Hazard information provided in the MSDS has been obtained from exhaustive literature surveys
followed by an intensive evaluation by a team of qualified scientists and health professionals to
determine the applicability and validity of scientific data.
4.2. Assessment of chemical hazard risk levels in the laboratory is most conveniently achieved
employing MSDS information.
5. PROCEDURE:
5.1 The safest and most complete way to identify and learn how to handle a chemical, any hazard that
may present and how to protect yourself from these hazards is to read MSDS. The information on the
MSDS includes all aspects of this data. Although the form itself may change, the information located
on these forms should be complete.
5.2 There is no legal requirement for analytical and toxicological testing of chemicals by consumers.
However, it is the user's responsibility to acquire a current MSDS on every chemical used in the
workplace, to provide access to such information to the worker and to train workers in the safe use,
handling and disposal of chemical and hazardous materials.
5.3 The following information are listed on the sheet of MSDS:
5.3.1 Material Identification: This section provides the chemical identity of the product as a whole.
Chemicals can be identified in several ways: by the formal chemical name, by the trade name,
by the chemical family or general category of chemical. The formal chemical name may be

provided only if the product is made up of a single chemical. Mixtures that are made up of
several different chemicals may not have a formal chemical name.
5.3.2 Physical Data:
5.3.2.a Boiling point: This is the temperature (in °F) at which the liquid boils at sea level.
5.3.2.b Vapor pressure: The higher the vapor pressure, the more easily a liquid will evaporate.
Liquid materials that evaporate easily are termed volatile, and this means that
concentrations can build up quickly when working the material in liquid form. Materials with
high vapor pressures may be particularly hazardous in enclosed or confined areas or if the
air circulation is poor.
5.3.2.c Vapor Density: This is the relative density or weight of a vapor or gas compared with an
equal volume of air. A vapor density less than one means that the substance will
tend to rise in air; a vapor density greater than one means that it will fall in air. Substances
with high vapor density will concentrate in the bottom of tanks.
5.3.2.d Appearance and odor: This information may help you identify what you are working with.
Keep in mind that odor or smell may be a poor measure of the concentration of the substance in
the air. Some substances can reach hazardous levels and still have no noticeable odor.

5.3.5.a Threshold Limit Value : This is an airborne concentration that should not be exceeded even for a
short time.
5.3.5.b Emergency and first aid procedures: The instructions for treatment of a victim of acute inhalation,
ingestion and skin or eye contact with a specific hazardous substance or its component. The listed
items should be for emergency procedures only.
5.3.6 Spill, Leak and Disposal Procedures:
5.3.6.a Steps to be taken in case material is released or spilled. This section includes the methods to be
used to control and clean up spills and leaks, applicable precautions such as: avoiding breathing
of gases or vapors, contact with liquids and solids, removing sources of ignition, etc. The list
should include the need (if any) for special equipment to be used for cleanup, such as glass or
plastic scoops, etc. Waste disposal methods should describe the acceptable, as well as prohibitive
methods for disposing of spilled solids or liquids, such as flushing with water, returning to
container, burning, etc. Also, the user should be alerted to any potential danger to the environment
such as effects on general population, crops, water supplies, etc.
5.3.7 Special Protection Information.
5.3.7.a Ventilation: Whenever ventilation is needed to capture or contain contaminants at their source as
means of controlling personal exposure to a specific substance or to prevent the build-up of an
explosive atmosphere, the appropriate type ventilation systems should be listed along with any
applicable conditions of use or limitations.
5.3.7.b Protective Gloves: Many solvents can easily penetrate through rubber or neoprene, so whenever
gloves are necessary to prevent skin exposure while handling a specific substance or material,
special glove design, construction and material requirements, are listed, as appropriate.
5.3.7.c Eye Protection: There are many types of eye and face protective devices on the market and for
almost any type hazard encountered there is a suitable type available. When eye or face
protection beyond that of general use are necessary while handling or otherwise exposed to the
specific substance or mixture, such special protective devices should be listed along with any
conditions of use or limitations.
5.3.8 Special Precaution:
5.3.8.a Precautions to be taken in handling or storage: Any additional or special precautions not addressed
elsewhere in the MSDS should be listed here. List may include such items as handling or storing
to avoid reaction hazards, safe storage life of the product in relation to reactivity, special

1.2 Below are the guidelines in assessing the degree and type of hazard associated with a particular
substance.
2. DEGREE OF HAZARDS.
2.1 Each of the three colored areas in the NFPA fire diamond has a box in which the degree of
hazard can be written. The degree of hazard is given by these numbers:
Number Degree of Hazard
4 EXTREME
3 SERIOUS
2 MODERATE
1 SLIGHT
0 MINIMAL
3. Types of Hazards.
3.1 The diamond is subdivided into four general categories:
3.1.1 Health (blue).
3.1.2 Flammability (red).
3.1.3 Reactivity (yellow).
3.1.4 Special (white).
