GUEST LECTURER PAPER

From our chance to meet Mr. Doug Snyder, the General Director of Keep Hanoi Clean
(KHC) and the Deputy Director of ARDOR Green via the Entrepreneurship class last
Wednesday, I have obtained a lot of new things I have never known of the new venture
world, as well as have come up with some lessons from these knowledge.

I. WHAT I HAVE LEARNT FROM THE SPEECH

I have learnt many things but I can summarize it in just 2 main points as follows:

1. Get insight into what you are doing

 As the deputy director, Mr. Doug has deep understanding about the green building
- his products. Therefore, he can point out for us the competitive advantages of
them and explain clearly why he developed it in that way. I think it is very
admirable because only when he believes in his products, customers can trust
them.
 He also taught us that to know the products well, you should have particular and
professional knowledge about them, and more broadly, about the field you are
working on.
 Getting insight into what he is doing also helps Mr. Doug Snyder find out the
challenges that he company face in Vietnamese market and can become the light
that he can follow to come up with the way to deal with them.

2. We should combine many strategies for the most effectiveness

Working as a deputy director gor ARDOR Green, he decided not to focus on just one
main strategy but to select the most suitable ones and apply all of them to make the best
of productivity. Each of six strategies that he is using for ARDOR Green concentrates on
each issue that the company has to resolve, hence, the company can fully develop. By
combining these strategies, he as well as his company has achieved some improvement in

1
increasing capacity, reducing labor or project time, appealling to more customers, so on
and so forth.

II. HOW I CAN USE WHAT I HAVE LEANRT

Although I currently don’t know what is my career in the future, whether I will do startup
or not, I think the speech from our guest has given some useful advices that I can apply
easily right now.
 I need to find the field that I’m interested in the most in my major at university. I
know I cannot be good at all of the subjects but I should focus on one to two fields
that attract me most and use that knowledge as my assistant in the career path
(although I am now still confused about it). Concentrating on one thing is better than
know a lot but not deep into any thing.
 Similar to combining many strategies to get the best results in managing a new
venture, I should use multiple ways to get my life better in many aspects such as
studying, healthcare and relationships. I cannot use one strategy to treat all problems
in my life but with each issue, I need to choose the most suitable way to deal with and
combine them for a more productive and happy life.
 One thing that came to my mind after our guest’s speech is that maybe in the future, I
will do a start-up or working for a start-up company. I have never thought about a
new venture on my career path but after Mr.Blake’s classes and Mr. Dough Snyder’s
speech, new venture company becomes more interesting and challenging, and it
teaches me many skills and knowledge that can help me a lot in the next periods of
my life. I have noted all the strategies, ways to deal with problems, all the advices and
perspectives of experts and each steps needed for start-up and will use it in the future.
