Due Date: 27th January 2020.

1. a) 2𝑥+1
Use partial fractions to show that (4𝑥−1)(𝑥+1)2 6

b) 2𝑥+1
Hence, determine ∫ (4𝑥−1)(𝑥+1)2 𝑑𝑥 4

2. A sequence {𝑎𝑛 } is such that 𝑎1 = √2 and 𝑎𝑛+1 = √2 + 𝑎𝑛

a) State the third term, 𝑎3 , of the sequence. 2

b) Use mathematical induction to prove that 𝑎𝑛 is increasing

and that it is bounded above by 3, that is 𝑎𝑛 < 𝑎𝑛+1 and

𝑎𝑛 ≤ 3 for all 𝑛 ∈ ℕ.

Hint: Treat as two separate PMIs. 8
