Notebook Week 11-7e:

I agree with Boyer’s position on how campuses should work. I do think that oftentimes many

people only focus on themselves and not what is going on in the world around them. Especially

in a high school setting, students are often taught things that they will never use again in their

life. These students aren’t connected to the outside world. Students should be inspired to go and

make a change, not just to finish an assignment. In order to make SLCC one of these “staging

grounds”, students and faculty need to be dedicated to making a change in the world. Faculty

should take into consideration the type of assignments that they are giving. Will this assignment

benefit my student in the future? What is my student learning from this task? As a campus,

students and faculty should be open to new possibilities. Students should feel welcome to

express their ideas and make a change. Faculty should encourage students to engage in their

communities and find solutions to problems. I think that all classes should have some sort of

civic engagement project that connects to that class. This allows students to get out of their

comfort zones and interact with people in their community. This also helps educate students on

different problems that are happening around them.
