My Reflection

For almost 5 months in learning about

new literacies in new curriculum, there are a
lot of things that we should consider
especially that we are already in 21st
century. There are many changes and new
for me. The most important thing, that I will
bring after I finished this course, is about
Multiculturalism. I, as a citizen who grown
up in a society, surrounded by different
cultures and tribes. I learned to accept that
we have differences. If I will be luckily
become an educator someday, I will apply
the learnings that I have learned in this
subject. To have a better classroom, the
acceptance and respect to those who are
from diverse culture must be a priority. As a
teacher, I will not allow any discrimination
in my watch. The true importance of
education is not all about how the students
being good in academic and getting good
grades, but valuing the people around you,
whether you are not in the same beliefs,
religion, and culture.

Module 3: Functional literacy

Literacy is said to be the ability to read and write, but being able to
read and write should not stop there it is more important that one is able to
put into action what he acquired through reading and writing the acquired
literacy should be put into function on the other words functional literacy.

From what I have experienced during our elementary days I may be

able to write type sentences, but I cannot express a complete thought,
and made it a simple paragraph, in terms of numbers, I may be
able to count but I do not know how to analyze graphs, interpret the
status, or even plan a budget. These are skills needed to make decisions
and function well in daily life. Cleary reading or writing words and
numbers are not enough to assess literacy, I needed to be able to
understand and use those words and numbers for practical purposes
such as deliberating ideas and solving problems.

Therefore, we as Humans need functional literacy to have a functional

society.

RESEARCH ANALYSIS & IMPLICATIONS

New Literacies Integration by Student Teacher/Cooperating Teacher Dyads in

Elementary Schools: A Collective Case Study
Analysis:

How are new literacies integrated by student teachers and cooperating teachers
in their schools?
The authors found that when teachers collaborated they were more likely to
invest time and effort into preparing and teaching using new literacies skills
learned in professional development. Weekly logs collected data recounting with
whom and how each participant collaborated. Thru collaboration between two
parties, the possibilities of sharing of ideas from both sides if things might work out
or not. So it is nice if there is somebody or any representative that also impart
another good ideas or how the things to make it better.
Implications:
How did the results of the study on new literacies in a Midwestern public
university impact the student teaching design?
This model needs to be studied more closely to look for further design suggestions.
Do certain characteristics of CTs, STs, and Coaches make them more effective
at integrating new literacies together? How does technology ability of CT and ST
affect outcomes? Can this model be scaled to be an integral part of the teacher
education program? How could the university supervisor role be reimagined when
implemented by the coach? And, will online collaborative groups be effective for
new literacies integration, per the call from Lawless and Pellegrino (2007).

MODULE 5: MULTICULTURALISM

A. Research Analysis
Improving student engagement and acceptance using multicultural texts
Rouse (2018)
Question: How can the use of multicultural texts impact students
understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures?

Multicultural texts play an important role in a classroom since it helps

the students to become more open-minded. It provides great help to
teachers to pass it down to the students to understand the diversity of
different cultures enrolled in one classroom. This made to understand to
respect their differences, especially in urban areas, where the majority of
the population are indigenous people or from an ethnic tribe. This
multicultural serves as an equilibrium to maintain a harmonious class,
where there is no racism. Where the quality of education is fair to all.
No discrimination regarding what type of tribe you are, respect and value
the individualism of students, such as beliefs and dialects. As an
educator, being patient is the key, since some of your students have
their dialect compared to others. You should be more careful in your
ways of teaching in terms of using words because the dialect that we
are practicing is different from theirs. The best solution in this kind of
situation is to teach and help them learn new dialects for them to adopt
our culture, and we should also start to adopt theirs.

MODULE 6: SOCIAL LITERACY
Research Analysis Students' Social Literacy in their Daily Journal Az-Zahra,
Sarkadi, and Bachtiar (2018)
1. What do the findings imply in the light of a teacher's instructional
strategy?

These findings will aid the techniques teachers use help students become a
strategic learner. But it still depends to the teachers if they are going to use
effective methods or strategy. The teachers must be sensitive in his environment
especially what the student needs and interests. Therefore, the finding imply in
the light of a teacher’s instructional strategy is a great helped in teaching-
learning process, because study shows that journal can help students in his/her
studies in order to remember the lesson, in this statement it shows that
teachers will have no problem in reminding past lesson because of this journal,
and the teaching process will be easy to proceed on another topic. Motivating
students to succeed, however, requires a very demanding task on the part of
the instructor. It takes a range of instructional methods or strategies to attract
the attention of students.

MODULE 7: MEDIA LITERACY

A. Curriculum Application.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of media in the teaching and learning process. As a teacher, how
will you handle it?
One of the advantages that I see in using social media, is there are so many resources given on that
platform that help the students in their learning process. And also, those students who hardly interact with
their classmates in the classroom gain some confidence to connect with their peers. For instance, one
student is feeling shy to ask his/ her classmates about the assignments that he/ she missed. But through
social media, such as Facebook and Messenger, the student will able to reach his/ her classmates without
facing them that way they can build the confidence to ask. But still, the students need to manage him/
herself to step outside of his/ her comfort zone, since real life is not all about social media. However, the
development of social media causes a negative impact. The bullying that we think only happens in a real-life
situation, also exists and becomes prone in social media. Many students experience depression and anxiety
that cause by social media. For instance, a group of students bullies one student in his/ her looks on
Facebook, and a lot of comments he/ she receives can cause social and even emotional distress. Cyberbullying
affects mental health issues, poor academic performance, a desire to drop out of school, and even suicidal
ideation. To prevent this kind of scenario, as a teacher I should always remind the students of the values in
life, where they respect individuals even if they have flaws and indifferences. During the parent’s meeting,
tackle this kind of situation, since the parents and the family is the first person that can teach their children,
to avoid bullying one person, the parents should always remind their offspring of the golden rule “Do not do
unto others, what you don’t want others to do unto you”.

B. Research Analysis Study of digital media literacy of the 5th and 6th-grade primary students in Beijing
Zhang (2016) 1. How does the result of the study impact student learning?
The impact of media literacy on students learning is that the students are able to increase their ability and
their proficiency of the learners to communicate or express their thoughts using the media platforms.
Media Literacy allows the students to engage in bringing the world of media into the classroom connects
learning with “real life” and validates their media culture as a rich environment for learning. It also provides
an opportunity for integrating all subject areas and creating a common vocabulary that applies across all
disciplines. Nowadays, it become a necessity in society, learning media resources such as social media, digital
channels, and electronic sites provide a massive amount of information that benefits the learners. However,
it also gives negative impact where the parents of the learners need their guidance.
Allowing students, especially from the primary level need supervision regarding their limitations in using
social media and accessing different sites on the internet. There are so many different sites that are being
prohibited for their age that may cause their lack of interest in their studies.

MODULE 2: 21st Century Teaching & Learning

What I experienced from the 21st century mode of teachings is that it’s slowly developed up
until today. The learnings we gained are at a different level due to the different teaching
techniques provided by the educators. I grew up in a small village where students and teachers
only used books as learning materials. My classmates and I paid attention to how our teachers
fed us basic skills through reading and listening, in order to gain knowledge. Our teachers used
some visual aids like cartolina, manila paper, and colored papers during our discussion. As of
today, the growth of technologies helps a lot to cater to the different perspectives and
techniques in teaching and makes them easy. When you have an assignment or projects, the
internet is everywhere. It’s easy to access. As for educators is to go beyond maintain and to
crate sustainability and professional longevity. The students minimize their time in research
unlike in the early 2000’s, you only have books as your essential source of information. The
time you had might be consumed due to not all books having the data that you need. You used
different books as options to satisfy and provide the best answer that you are looking for. In
every innovation there are also disadvantages, one case for this is the student becoming lazy.
With the help of easy access to the internet, the research can be done in instant. The
student has a lot of time to spend, especially on social media and computer games. These two
platforms create a huge impact in our society, especially in the present. The student has no
more outdoor activities due to the influence of the two, unlike before even when you are at
home, after you finish your homework. You just go outside and play with your friends. Your
development as a child is in balance.
