Student Professor
I’ve read an article about 21st Century Filipino Educators by Manila Standard Lifestyle posted
January 09. 2017, stated that in a rapidly evolving world, in which new and exciting things
constantly grab people’s attention, teachers, more than ever, need to look for ways to keep
students engaged and interested. Examples, activities, songs, poems, stories, and illustrations are
based on local culture, history, and reality. This makes the lessons relevant to the learners and
easy to understand. Students acquire in-depth knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes through
continuity and consistency across all levels and subjects. Simply put, they need to be creative.
The chalk-and-blackboard, speak-and-listen type of teaching is no longer enough to prepare
learners for the challenges of tomorrow. What today’s students need is a dynamic learning
environment that encourages collaboration and creativity so they can absorb lessons better as
they develop 21st century skills.

Based on what I’ve encountered in my Senior High school days, there are a lot of adjustments
like what I expect it’s just the same routine that the teacher is in front discussing the topic, but K-
12 is different. What I’ve experienced in my SHS days my teachers or professors are giving a lot
of paper works, they let you work on it, study and analyze your works and then the professor
give you the chance to report or interpret your own idea and it is time for his/her to justify if it
perfectly complete or you missed something important details or information, and we thought
that we are the experimental students because as far as I know this program are not fully trained
by DepEd but as time goes by teaching is a way of training that students and teachers are doing
their best so they can give and take about the topic their handling and the good thing is its not
just about the topic itself teachers are applying it into real life situation which somehow the
students understand it easily. And its not all about us discussing the topic in front we also
improve our teaching and learning skills by using an advance technologies like computers,
laboratory and some other stuff to help both sides to make it easy but of course at the end of the
day we are still learning.

Philippines is the last Asian nation to adopt the K-12 program. In the middle of this change,
countless groups have judged it since the country enforced the program in 2011. Alongside, the
government expects this response from the public but drives its enforcement to advance learning
in the country. Its critics may have little knowledge on the K-12 method. Even teachers and non-
teaching staff still doubt if this scheme is effective. As consequence, the amendment triggered
many groups to oppose its enforcement and aim to stop or, at least, stall its use. These reasons
must be enough to inspire teachers to support the K-12 method and save themselves from
worrying over its practice. With government officials, teachers, students, and the public working
together, the Philippines will yield global-ready talents. Each mentor just needs to focus on the
new scheme’s bright and lasting effects.
Teachers are charged with providing a foundation for life in the complex, diverse and uncertain
economic and social environment of the current times. They are faced with the different impact
of new technologies, new economies and a challenging world. Being a teacher in the 21st
Century goes beyond work in the classroom; it requires an understanding of the multiple contexts
of teaching, the multiple players in education, and the diverse roles of the teacher. It also
involves an ongoing professional learning in the forms of further studies, participation in
professional development programs and engagement in professional school-based learning
communities.
It is the goal of teachers to develop students with the skills and knowledge necessary not just for
lifelong learning but more specifically for the knowledge economy. The knowledge-based
economy is a complex interaction between individuals and institutions actively seeking to learn
from one another. One of its characteristics is innovativeness, where people often exhibit
curiosity, creativity and commitment. As such, they develop into people with a vision, become
customer-driven, have a holistic view, and are risk-tolerant. They are able to utilize a resources
and mutual learning process that translates knowledge into economic growth.
Another article that I’ve red is from Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor
Magtolis Briones underscored the importance of instilling 21st century skills among all learners
during the 3rd Annual EduTECH Philippines Conference and Exhibition held from February 20
to 21 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. When Briones stated her speech she
explained the key deliverables of the Department with emphasis on making education relevant to
the urgent needs of and opportunities for the nation. This is in line with the event’s theme, “21st
Century Quality Education for All in the Philippines.”
“What we teach and encourage our learners to learn from school has to be relevant to the 21st
century, to our needs, and has to be responsive to the challenges that our country faces at this
time. Even as we focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, we must not
forget that we are Filipinos and we have a history and multi-varied culture all over the country.
This is why it is equally important to focus as well on the social sciences or the so-called soft
sciences. I believe this is possible. We don't have to neglect one for the other.” Secretary Briones
stated.
She further explained that there is something new and exciting happening in and outside the
Philippines every day to which the basic education system has to respond. Thus, it has resulted in
massive outputs like the provision of school buildings with improved design and facilities, and
the setting up of 21st century classrooms with various innovative features and equipment.
