Doubtless, rebellion can be noble. There are rebels that I admire, renegades
who have done much to expose hypocrisy and overcome injustice through their
stubborn – or courageous – nonconformity. Jesus himself was in many ways a rebel,
who clashed with the mighty power structures of his day. Permissiveness for the
sake of resistance has saturated each side of society. Governments advance the
legend of a "nonpartisan" or "valueless" society, in which no belief system is
advanced over some other. In any case, who can guarantee that they are genuinely
unbiased? Who can stand equitably a ways off, liberated everything being equal, and
coolly watch all philosophies all things considered.
We hold these Truths to act naturally obvious, that all Men (and Women) are
made equivalent, that they are supplied by their Creator with certain inalienable
rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness...whenever
any Form of Government gets damaging to these Ends, it is the Right of the People
to adjust or nullify it and to start new Government, establishing its Framework on
such Principles, and sorting out its Powers in such Form as to them will appear to be
destined to influence their Safety and Happiness.
