BACKGROUND

Money is an essential commodity that helps you run your life. Exchanging goods for goods is an
older practice and without any money, you cannot buy anything you wish. But it different for
student life, they used money to pay student bills and others needed. According to HSBC’s The
Value of Education -The Price of Success report, which covered more than 10,000 parents and
1,500 students across 15 countries including Malaysia, university students face a shortfall in
funding despite receiving money from their parents to help pay for their undergraduate or
postgraduate degree course. Based on New Straits Times, In Malaysia, the report stated that
parents contribute on average RM24,100 towards their children’s university education. However,
the students estimate they spend RM67,600 in total over the course of a degree inclusive of
tuition fees, leaving a significant gap of RM43,500 to fill from other sources.Malaysian
university students are increasingly turning to paid employment to bridge the gap between the
cost of studying and funding from their parents. Eighty-nine per cent of students in Malaysia,
almost every nine in 10, work while studying, mostly because they need the additional money.

Most of the students in University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Shah Alam need to earn cash
to support themselves while they complete their degrees because most of them comes from
group B40 (earn below rm4000 monthly). Besides, students working part-time will get more
experience which will help them in their future permanent jobs. If a student manages to find a
job that has things related to his course in the university, he is lucky because he can learn more
about the job. Working part time while studying in UiTM Shah Alam has been put forward as a
problem and the effects on students’ educational achievements need to be investigated.
Working part time can improve or help students to develop particular personal characteristics
including responsibility, time management and better achievements in their studies and CGPA.
Students can learn to be responsible and they have to come to work on time depending on their
working hours a day. In addition, students can learn to value money. It will make them realize
that it takes a lot of time and effort to make a better living, and this experience will help them to
be confident inlife.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

Working part time can help improve student’s self esteem. Through earning, students will gain a
sense of achievement. They can realize their own value and prove to themselves that they are
capable of doing something good. Also, by gaining a measure of financial independence,
students will acquire a sense of maturity but, when it comes to the reality of life, but there are a
lot of negativity rather than positivity being a part timer. Students who work part time may be
too tired to concentrate on their studies and it can also be the cause of laziness. A variety of
studies have examined the impact that part time employment might need on full time students’
studies. As an example Manthei and Gilmore (2005) considered that working part time has made
student less desired for study and Jogaratnam and Buchanan (2004) found that new students who
were balancing a full time academic together with part time job were likely to suffer from state
of mental or emotional strain and it can also be known as stress. However in later research,
Curtis (2002) found a majority of her research sample considered there to be entirely positive
outcomes of working part time which there was no conclusive relationship between the student’s
grades and their academic performance. Striking a balance between studying and working is
definitely not impossible, but it's extremely hard to handle. In response to this problem, our study
proposes to investigate the reasons for making the students work part time and also the problems
that they faced.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasons and problems in relation to students
working part time. This study suggests several research objectives to be attained as follows:

 To determine the reasons UiTM Shah Alam students work part time.

 To investigate the effects of working part time while studying in university.

 To identify the advantage of working part time for the future while studying.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of the study will benefit student of the UiTM Shah Alam in general in several ways.
Firstly, they will get valuable information aboutthe potential benefits from doing a part time job
while studying along with encouraging students to improve their management skill in study and
finance. The findings will also provide The UiTM management such as HEP (Student welfare)
with relevant information in terms of students’ opinion about the part time job while studying to
create the solution in encouraging the students to expose themselves in part time job. Therefore,
this study is important to students because they need to manage their time to complete the task
given by the lecturer and also to keep up with their finances as a student to survive through tough
economic time. It is also important to HEP to know how well the students perform academically
and whether it will bring a good or bad impact.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

Regarding data collection surveying, we faced many limitations, which may possibly affect the
research a little bit.
 Low response from people to answer the online questionnaire.
 Restricted Movement Order (RMO) because of Covid-19 issue.
 Lack of accurate information as I collected some secondary for conducting this study
 Time limitation was another problem in this case.
 Correct information was not provided.

METHODOLOGY

This study aims to understand that how students cope up academic performance and job life. It

focuses on the way how university students interpret and make sense of their experience and
self-dependency. From years to years, UiTM students take a chance of their free time to do part
time job to back up their finance. We have agreed to use some method for this research.

Research instrument used.

During this Restricted Movement Order (RMO), we are not allowed to make a face to face
interview. Upon that, the other way to collect data is by making up a questionnaire. We will use
Google Docs Form as an online platform of the questionnaires and Whatsapp application to
distribute the forms. This tool can use to survey the impact of students working part time while
studying in UiTM Shah Alam. The questionnaire consists of variety of reasons, problem and
other important things about student doing part time job.

Research Respondents

The respondents were students from UiTM Shah Alam from various faculties. The
questionnaires were distributed to all students as they were between 20 to 30 years old. We used
to spread the questionnaire start from our own faculty which is Faculty of Architecture, Planning
and Surveying (FSPU), and then follow with other faculty in UiTM. There is limitation time of 2
weeks for student to answer start from 22 April – 6 May 2020.

Data Analysis

The data were analyzed from frequency count into percentages. They were then transferred to
suitable tables and charts.
