1.0 INTRODUCTION

1
OUMH1603

Global citizenship education (GCE) is transformative, providing students with the

opportunity and the ability to realize their rights and obligations to promote a better world
and the future7. Global citizenship education also focuses on learning from other
transformative educational processes, such as human rights, national or cultural
understanding, sustainable development and education for peace. The basic objectives of
global citizenship education are to protect the respect of all people, to build a sense of
belonging and to help students become responsible and active global citizens. It’s also
resolving the interconnected challenges of 21st century.

Therefore, with this global citizenship education we are able to create human
awareness of environmental quality as well as understand how humans interact with the
environment responsibly to safeguard human well-being. In addition, with global
citizenship education we can also create people with the knowledge, skills, attitudes,
motivations and commitments in solving environmental pollution issues either
individually or in groups. Thus, with a high degree of knowledge and awareness of the
issue of environmental pollution it will create a good human population and will be
responsible for the preservation and preservation of the environment for future
generations.

In this assignment, I will be pointing out what is Global Citizenship Education

(GCED), the three core conceptual dimension in GCED and how it brings benefit to the
society to resolve the environmental issue. Next, I will point out one environmental issue
that is currently happening now and how it actually affect us. At the end of this
assignment, we will acquire more knowledge regarding Global Citizenship Education and
how to become one, the major environmental issue as well as the causes and ways to
prevent it from becoming much worse.

2.0 ENVIROMENTAL ISSUE - AIR POLLUTION

2
OUMH1603

The main cause of environmental pollution is due to irresponsible human

behavior in protecting the environment. Because of this kind of human behavior, humans
have to deal with the many negative consequences of neglecting the preservation and
preservation of nature. As a result, natural disasters lead to loss of life, habitat, property,
animal habitat, plants and more.

Before we talk further, we must first understand the definition of environmental

pollution. Pollution is the accumulation of substances that are not suitable for life in our
environment 2. These inappropriate substances are called contaminants. Most of the
pollution is due to human activities. The environment is all living and non-living things
that are naturally present on the surface of the earth, or part thereof.

Briefly on this environmental pollution, it is divided into three parts: air pollution,
water pollution, and soil pollution. Below is a description of what the contamination is:-

https://ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alam_sekitar

Environmental pollution issues are a major issue in the press today and they have
become more serious lately. Many of the causes or causes of this are due to uncontrolled
development and high population growth, especially in the urban areas resulting in more
resources being needed to increase production to support the livelihood and consumption
of the population. It is undeniable that development is crucial to a country's development,
but development that does not take into account or is not balanced by environmental
capabilities will certainly make the concept of sustainable development unrealistic.
As a result, not only will this generation experience problems but future
generations will inherit the problems that are created today. As a result, various issues
and issues related to environmental quality are deteriorating and are further aggravated by
various weaknesses and obstacles in addressing these issues.
Based on the infographic it shows recent air pollution in Pasir Gudang, Johor. Air
pollution is a condition that involves the introduction of any chemicals, particulate matter

or biological substances that can cause harm, malnutrition to humans or other living
organisms and damage the environment when they are caused by the atmosphere.
Various efforts to address environmental issues have been made either by the
government, the private sector or the public through legal and non-judicial methods but
the results are still unsatisfactory. One of the measures that can be used to address
environmental pollution is the authority to punish individuals or organizations that have
been found guilty of environmental pollution. Authorities such as the Ministry of
Science, Technology and Environment should enforce existing laws to punish those
involved. In addition, the school should also introduce environmental education to school
children by engaging in various aspects that lead to the preservation of a peaceful
environment. It aims to spread awareness more effectively.

Lately, there have been various environmental events that have appeared on social
media. Among them is the Air Pollution in Pasir Gudang, before the community was hit
by a case of chemical contamination in the Kim Kim River, Pasir Gudang, johor,
resulting in the health of more than 6000 people due to inhaling methane gas believed to
be methane, it also caused 111 schools in the Pasir Gudang area are closed due to the
removal of toxic waste on March 7, 2019.

On March 12, 2019, it is believed that two illegal tire factory workers in Kulai
and a Singapore citizen were arrested on suspicion of being involved in this pollution
case, but no further comment was given. The factory owner is under investigation for
finding evidence of the chemical properties found in the Kim River waste.
On March 19, 2019, the polluted River Kim River is declared free of chemicals and safe.
After 3 months, the water, which was supposed to be calm, returned. The Kim River
tragedy again haunts the residents of Pasir Gudang when 17 schools were forced to close
due to air pollution.

Beginning on June 20, 2019, 15 students from Taman Mawar Religious School,
Pasir Gudang will experience symptoms of vomiting and shortness of breath after
exposure to air pollution in the area. Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Department head

Environmental pollution issues can be mitigated by the availability of Global

Citizenship Education (GCED) as it can raise awareness of the importance of the
environment to humanity. The video above shows us how important this world is to its
people. How we use and protect the life of the flora from being polluted. In the "global"
aspect of this world, the freedom of life is so much desired by every creature,
unfortunately we cannot use that freedom as much as it can to bring harm to the
Environment.

There is a lot of information on some of the websites featured in the video to
create awareness on solving environmental issues. Global Citizenship Education (GCED)
has taught the community to think creatively and critically to do something that will
benefit all nations. If this is not done then it will cause the country to be affected by
various pollution problems as we see it today. This is because there is no awareness of
irresponsible people. Various awareness campaigns can be created by specific parties as
they become more widespread. Further actions such as fines can also be imposed on
those who are subject to pollution.

3.0 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION

7
OUMH1603

In a changing global context, and in a global and intertwined world with

increasing manifestations of both solidarity and intolerance, food insecurity, climate
change, incidents of increasing violent extremism and acts of violence, it is imperative
that the education system equips students with values , the knowledge and skills to
overcome this challenge. The infographic above shows that they should instill respect for
human rights, including inclusion, gender equality, social justice and diversity. Their
principles are to provide students with the competence and opportunity to learn to live
together in a globalized world and to realize their rights and obligations to promote a
harmonious, safe and inclusive society. Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) are recognized as mutually reinforcing
approaches, with similarities and specificities. Both are aimed at equipping young people
with the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and behaviors by building and creatively
addressing current and future global challenges. In addition, it encourages the creation of
a more sustainable and resilient society and is a proactive contributor to a more secure,
tolerant, and inclusive world.

Dimensions of global citizenship education are:

 Cognitive – Humans will gain critical knowledge, understanding, and thinking
on the issue of widespread air pollution and the interdependence and interdependence of
various parties and residents.
 Socio-emotional – humans have a sense of belonging, share values and
responsibilities, empathy, solidarity and respect for various parties.
 Behavioral – humans act effectively and responsibly under any circumstances
to achieve a safe and sustainable world.

To become a global citizenship, they must have the sense of civic responsibility
toward their local community whose action helps in the contribution of building values
and practices of community. Education in the global citizenship required more from the
younger generations such as creativity, flexibility and proactive so they capable of
solving problems such as environmental issue that we faced today which is pollution all
around the worlds. Thus, with a high degree of knowledge and awareness of

8
OUMH1603

environmental pollution it will create a good human population and be responsible for the
preservation and conservation of the environment for future generations.
Meanwhile, global citizens are those who live in the moment, they are intellectual
and above all else they live morally. They should know the ultimate goal of global citizen
before being one which is to create sustainability throughout the entirely of the world.
Sustainable community are necessary for the survival, happiness and peace amongst the
global population.

Finally, with global citizenship education, we are able to bring nurture in the
humanities the care of environmental issues so that they do not persist and intensify. With
this in mind, the environmental pollution can be solved which is yearly conversation and
live in harmony.

5.0 BENEFIT OF THE CONCEPTUAL DIMENSION OF GCED IN SOCIETY

9
OUMH1603

As we all know, there are 3 concept or main core in global citizenship education.
These 3 key conceptual dimension can contribute to a many thing, in resolving
environmental issue are one of it. There are:

4.1 Cognitive- Humans will gain critical knowledge, understanding, and thinking
on the issue of widespread air pollution and the interdependence and interdependence of
various parties and residents. One of the factor causing climate change is the attitude of a
human being for not taking environmental issue seriously and a lack of knowledge on
what causing it, how it affecting us and how to prevent it from becoming worse. With this
concept, people should be able to acquire more knowledge and help the people to think
more critically in resolving environmental issue such as planting more trees, use eco-
friendly product, invent new product from used item and many more. Therefore, the
environment can be save from pollution, people will have a better future and a better
place to live in and the connection between peoples will grow stronger because they all
aiming for the same thing which is a better environment for all of us to live in.

4.2 Socio-emotional – humans have a sense of belonging, share values and

responsibilities, empathy, solidarity and respect for various parties. From this point of
view, global citizenship education (GCED) can teach people to have a sense of belonging
to one another, one that is responsible for one another. This kind of behavior needs to be
instilled in everyone because with such a human nature it is easy for us to produce human
beings who respect each other in protecting our environmental rights. For an example,
people can organize a campaign for all to joining in and do activities such as recycling,
planting trees and mores.

4.3 Behavioral – humans act effectively and responsibly under any circumstances
to achieve a safe and sustainable world. In order to achieve a safe and sustainable world
without environmental pollution it is not just a theory but it is a practical necessity
because the theory will not be perfect without practice. Existing knowledge but not
practiced can be ascribed to a fruitless tree.

OUMH1603

5.0 WAYS TO RESOLVE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE

11
OUMH1603

The way to resolve this air pollution issue can be formal or informal. Starting to
address the issue of air pollution informally is at home. Parents play an important role in
educating their children by instilling a sense of responsibility and responsibility in caring
for the environment. Home schooling can be done in many ways for parents to educate
their children by greening the housing area by planting trees such as fruit trees or plants
in residential neighborhoods as they can reduce the problem of rising temperatures. In
addition, the carbon dioxide content in the air can be reduced and increase the oxygen gas
content through its photosynthesis process8. Such education should be instilled in them
since childhood Malay proverb says "let the curved bamboo shoot".

Formal education can also be done in schools where in this context the
government plays a role in its success. Among the efforts the government can take is to
address the issue of pollution and how to address it in the school spending syllabus9.
Schools should also work together to make this work a success by creating a program of
moral education or environmental protection campaigns.

In addition, the workforce can also create environmental campaigns that are
broadcast on glass screens and radios so that the public can appreciate the environment.
A sense of responsibility must be instilled in each individual to keep the environment
clean and safe for future generations. The government can also advertise on glass screens
by informing the public about recycling which encourages them to sell recyclable goods
to used merchants. Recyclable items include newspapers, old magazines, used papers and
paper boxes. These items can be reprocessed to produce new paper.

6.0 CONCLUSION

12
OUMH1603

In conclusion, this assignment is more focused on Global Citizenship

Education(GCED) and environmental issue. This assignment will point out what is
GCED and its three core conceptual dimension. Next, environmental issue are also
included in this task which is global warming. The connection between GCED and
environmental issue also has been discussed and how GCED manage to help in reducing
the environmental issue that we facing right now and each party is made up of
individuals, schools, and governments in relation to each other in making a concerted
effort to curb environmental pollution in Malaysia. As discussed in this essay, schools
and governments should work together to take initiatives to educate and guide individuals
to make our country free from environmental pollution.

7.0 SELF-REFLECTION

13
OUMH1603

I want to thank God that with His permission I was given the opportunity to
complete this assignment. This assignment is closely related to how GCED benefit the
society in resolving the current environmental issue and also how their three key
conceptual dimension can help in producing a global citizen. Throughout my journey of
completing assignments, I have encountered many challenges and obstacles but I have
also gained invaluable knowledge.
While completing this assignment, I find it hard to find a relevant reference for
me to include in this assignment. A relevant reference should not be taken from the
website such as Facebook, twitter, blogger and Wikipedia as these websites can easily be
edit by other person. Next, I also find out that I have less knowledge about global
citizenship educations, and what it’s actually benefited to us. With that, I have to read
more so that I can acquire more knowledge about this assignment. After that, I also
obtained a various knowledge on environmental issue. There are actually many major
environmental issue that we are currently facing right now, it’s just we are not concern
enough for our environment.
After completing, I was able to know about the environmental issue that we face
right now and how to prevent it from becoming much worse in the future. In conclusion, I
strongly agree that we all should become a global citizen in order to create a better future.
For me, this subject is an important subject for all student to take because it allows us to
learn more valuable knowledge and it allows to practice our critical thinking.
