Brooke Pakistan Partnerships

Brooke Pakistan (BP) has two types of partners in operational areas:

• Funded partners
• Non funded/strategic partners (have MOUs and work in collaboration).

Funded partners

1. Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO): The objective of partnership is “To improve health and
welfare of working equine animals through strengthening of the existing resources by capacity
building of marginalized equine owners/users, training of local service providers (LSPs) and their
linkages in Brooke-partner operational area”. Working in five districts of Sindh, including
Shikarpur/Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana and Kambar Shahadadkot, Brooke Pakistan’s role is to provide
funds, technical support and capacity building of field staff.

2. National Rural Support Programme (NRSP): The aim is to strengthen partnership between BP and
NRSP with a view to improving the health and welfare of working equine animals in select
communities of NRSP operational area. Working in two districts of Punjab, Bahawalnagar and
Sargodha, in both workplace and brick kilns projects. Brooke’s role is to provide resource person to
facilitate trainings/follow-up trainings for NRSP social mobilization staff, and LSPs to enhance their
veterinary skills and improve knowledge in basic equine management practices.

Non-funded partners

1. Government Livestock and Dairy Development (L&DD) Department, Punjab, Sindh and KPK: Develop
cardinal relationship with L&DD throughout the operational areas. They provide us with offices in their
premises in 15 Districts which is one of the key indicators to assess our liaison with local institutions.
Mutual events are being carried out like our participation in farmers’ days, L&DD provides mobile
veterinary services in different communities, OIE standards Video on animal welfare are being shown
in their training buses.

2. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Punjab: SPCA is working quite efficiently to
provide health cover to needy equines independently in conjunction with their other domains. Working
in 17 districts of Punjab, BP has implemented BVRG leading to refer all cases to LSPs, and is
constantly working to strengthen animal health referral system of which SPCA is part of. Brooke role
is to provide on the job training and mentoring of their field staff.

3. University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF): The purpose of this partnership is to provide general
equine veterinary training and demonstration on issues related to working equine welfare and good
equine management practices. TOT training of instructors on selected topics and promoting one
health/one welfare approach.

4. University of Agriculture Peshawar: The purpose of partnership is to provide a safe carcass disposal
facility in the vicinity of the university by constructing an incinerator. Euthanized animals are being
properly disposed of to prevent zoonotic diseases. Brooke’s animal welfare policy supports
euthanasia to alleviate the suffering of equines.

5. Aysha Chandigarh Foundation (ASF): The ASF is a civil society organization. It provides healthcare
services in selected brick kilns in selected area of Punjab like Rawalpindi, along with their other
domains. The purpose of partnership is to promote linkages and referral systems so that equine
owning communities get benefits from their different initiatives. In future, Brooke will be interested in
extending the working partnership in Karachi with a special focus on advocacy work.

6. Association for Bio Risk Management (ABM) Pakistan: The purpose of the memorandum of
understanding (MOU) is to initiate collaboration and partnership for the welfare of animals and
humans through capacity building programs, advocacy, and lobbying. To promote mutual co-
operation and coordination for equine welfare and one health in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Brooke’s main
role is to provide technical support and TOT training to their instructors. ABM will support equine
welfare in livestock policy through the participation of Brooke in regional and provincial/national
policy development workshops. ABM will include animal welfare in its relevant community-based
programmes and will invite Brooke for technical support in the best interest of the community.
