OVERVIEW OF TERMINOLOGIES
E-LEARNING
A learning system based on formalised learning methodology but with the help of electronic resources is
known as E-learning. E-learning can also be termed as a network enabled acquisition of skills and
knowledge, and the delivery of education is made to a large number of recipients at the same or different
times. While learning can be based in or out of the classrooms, the use of computers and the Internet forms
the major component of E-learning.
E-TEACHING / E-TRAINING
E-Teaching is the method of delivering lectures that involves computational systems to communicate and
cooperate with learners at many levels. These systems might use the World Wide Web or CD/DVD-ROM and
asynchronous learning environments to provide lectures outside the classroom. E-Teaching / E-Training is
the convergence of the internet and learning, or Internet enabled learning.
E-ASSESSMENT / E-APPRAISAL
E-Assessment is also known as digital evaluation, E- Appraisal online assessment or computer-based
assessment, is the use of information technology in assessment such as educational assessment. This covers
a wide range of activity ranging from the use of a word processor for assignments to on-screen testing.
Specific types of e-assessment include multiple choice, online/electronic submission, computerized adaptive
testing and computerized classification testing.
E-LIBRARY
E-library or Digital library is a physical site and/ or website that provide around the clock online access to
digitised audio, video, and written material. It provides free / paid copies of books, journals etc. available to
the users. The digital content may be stored locally or accessed remotely via computer networks. A digital
library is a type of information retrieval system. The resources of the electronic libraries are in both print
and electronic form. The electronic media are used for storage, retrieval and delivery of information.
LEARNING MANAGEMENT SHYSTEM (LMS)
A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation,
tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom, online events and training contents.
PROS
E-Education is effective for training across multiple locations (and saves money at the same time)
Able to link the various resources in several varying formats
Very efficient way of delivering courses online
Due to its convenience and flexibility, the resources are available from anywhere and at any time
Part time students or are working full time can take advantage of E-Education
E- learning promotes active and independent learning
Access to the Internet 24x7, Students can train themselves anytime and from anywhere at their own
pace
Through discussion boards and chats, Students are able to interact with everyone online and also
clear their doubts if any
The video instructions that are provided for audio and video learning can be rewound and seen and
heard again and again if you do not happen to understand the topic first time around
Well, there are not many disadvantages of eLearning, the main one being that Student get knowledge only on
a theoretical basis and when it comes to putting to use whatever students had learnt, it may be a little
different. The face-to-face learning experience is missing, which may matter to some of you
Most of the online assessments are limited to questions that are only objective in nature
There is also the problem of the extent of security of online learning programs
The authenticity of a particular student's work is also a problem as online just about anyone can do a
project rather than the actual student itself
The assessments that are computer marked generally have a tendency of being only knowledge-
based and not necessarily practicality-based
However, the recent advancements in the information and communication technology all the above cons can
be mitigated to a greater extent.
