Activity #2 on Data Presentation of NPI Data

NAME: CHUA, Heifley F Score: __________

GENERAL DIRECTIONS: Write all your answers to these problems in this document. Support your answers by copying
necessary outputs of PhSTAT/MS EXCEL.

PROBLEMS:
2.) The variable elapse quantifies the time (in seconds) that an individual spent answering the entire questionnaire.
a.) Compute for the sample mean and median of the variable elapse.
Table 1. Elapse (The Time Spent Answering the Entire
Questionnaire).
Descriptive Statistics (NPI)
Variable Mean Median
elapse 1341468.197 692.5

b.) Construct a histogram, consisting of 10 bars, for the variable elapse. Based on the shape of the constructed visual, which
measure in (a) would be more appropriate to describe the center of the distribution of elapse? Why?

Upper Class Limits

Based on the shape of the constructed visual, the median measure in (a) would be more appropriate to describe the center of
the distribution of elapse because the mean value of the given variable is not found in the class interval where 99.90% of
data are and where the median value of the given variable is.
3.) The summary table of narcissistic tendency scores of all respondents is attached below:

Based on some empirical evaluations, it has been identified that any narcissistic tendency score beyond 34 and time elapsed to
answer the questionnaire longer than 547 seconds are considered as outliers. The resulting table provided summary descriptive
measures of score and elapse excluding the identified outliers.

Based on this table.

a.) comment on how the exclusion of outliers affected the re-computation of the mean, median, variance, and standard
deviation, particularly for the variable score.
As outliers were excluded for the variable score, there was a slight decrease in the mean, median, variance, and
standard deviation, indicating that only few of the given sample tend to be narcissistic.
b.) use an appropriate measure to compare the variation of observed non-outlying values of score and elapse. Which variable
now appears to have values which are more dispersed away from its mean?
Using the coefficient of variation to compare the variation of observed non-outlying values of score and elapse, it
appears that the variable score has values which are more dispersed away from its mean with the CV of 61.51% as
compared to the variable elapse’s CV of 33.47%.
