The current study shows the feasibility of the proposed
business entitled "ECH²O". ECH²O is a biodegradable bottled mineral
water that is made out of seaweed or algae established by the
manufacturing corporation, SeaPaul Inc. The company is comprised by
the five proponents, Jerika Albaniel, Summer Ceniza, Paul Jimenez,
Claren Madrid, and Seira Orpilla. Furthermore, ECH²O will be an
environmental-friendly product because of its composition and it will be
a useful substitute for plastic bottles and especially for the common
plastics that can be found around the market. SeaPaul Inc. aims to
diminish wastes that are brought by plastic containers, hence why they
designed a product that will dissolve or decompose easily.

The business will be targeting students, athletes,

employees, teachers, business owners, and professionals. SeaPaul
Inc. plans to put up an e-commerce website, booths in malls, and
supply leading grocery stores in the Metro Manila region and the nearby
areas in the Philippines. As for the production of the ECH²O bottles,
the factory located in Cabuyao, Laguna shall consists of machineries
for bottle making, and machineries for mineral water filtration. In
addition, an assumed initial capital of 5,100,000 Philippine Pesos will
be needed for the establishment of the business. In the year 2020, The
company aims to supply at least 150,000 bottled waters at a cost of 50
each to reach the expected sales projection of 8,400,000 pesos. As the
business progress, the company aims to expand the products to not
only bottles but to cups with lids, wrappers, bags, straws, and other
containers as well.

Chapter 1
Marketing Aspect 1
Introduction

ECH²O is a manufacturing type of business that offers

purely biodegradable item bags, food wrappers, and water containers

made from algae or commonly known as seaweeds. ECH²O is the

name of the product, it is pronounced as Echo. The name signifies and

represents the objectives, and the mission of the company. Echo which

is very distinct to the pronunciation of Eco, signifies a connection with

environment, and the company's objective to produce Eco-Friendly

products. Echo can also be defined as repetition of an idea, this

signifies the company's vision to initiate and promote the eradication of

plastic waste. Moreover, H²O is an element the represents water, the

product. This product will be a great solution to the most problematic

crisis around the world which the tons of plastic waste. It will be an

environmental-friendly product because of its composition and it will be

a useful substitute for plastic bottles and especially for the common

plastics that can be found around the market. Since this is a

biodegradable product, it will not take years before to fully decay and it

can help in preservation of trees and avoid deforestation for the

production of plastic bottles, or plastic containers. It will still meet the

desire satisfaction of the customers because its durability will be still

like a normal plastic but only made from seaweeds.

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

According to Vila (2018), the Philippines accumulates 2.7

2
million tons of plastic waste annually and 20% or 500,000 tons of the

said waste leaks into the ocean. In today's world, plastic is very

commonly used by the whole population, yet it does affect the

ecosystem. Furthermore, as the population increases, the amount of

waste also increases. Millions of plastics are thrown away and since a

lot of those plastics are not degradable, they will remain to be in the

system unless they are cleared up. the plastic pollution in the marine

and land environment is present and could be regarded as toxic waste,

considering that the plastic is made of synthetic substances that is

dangerous for the environment. Therefore, the researchers came up

with the idea of replacing plastic to natural and organic alternatives.

They believe that is their responsibility as part of the society to

contribute in making a safer and better environment. The proposed

product can be a huge step in lessening the plastic production being

used daily and help preserve marine and land life.

The study aims to discover the feasibility of ECH²O, the

eco-friendly biodegradable products, to launch as one efficient business

in the market. SeaPaul Inc. carries its prospect of diminishing plastic

wastes at large scale around the world, especially those countries that

have seaweed-rich oceans. Although SeaPaul Inc. will start selling the

beverage container or the water bottle alone, the target market will

expected to be broad in the future for it is highly applicable to

3
manufacture different kinds of algae made products such as bags,

straws, and food wrappers. It can be sold to individual consumers as

well as to cafes and other stores. The researchers intend to know how

the market, or even the society itself, accept this product.

Background of The Study

On February 2019, SeaPaul Inc. was established in San

Beda College Alabang. SeaPaul Inc. is a group compromised by 5

members. Furthermore, this members are Senior High School students

of the Accounting, Business, and Management Strand. As part of their

fulfillment of requirements for their course Research Project: Feasibility

Study, they were tasked to create their own innovative business

concepts and vote for the most feasible one. Hence, ECH²O was

created, a product that is plastic-free, and made of seaweed or algae.

Plastic remains to be very imminent in 21st century as this serves as

convenience to the customers and retailers. Moreover, ECH²O offers

the convenience of plastic but in a more ethical and eco-friendly

method. SeaPaul Inc. aims to diminish wastes that are brought by

plastic containers, hence why they designed a product that will dissolve

or decompose easily.

In terms of production, the researchers shall invest in a

4
factory with extruding machines that shall mix and heat the raw

materials which are seaweed or algae, and a machine that shall mold

and cool down the bottles to its shape. The bottles shall be properly

labeled and designed to appeal to the market and retailers. The

company will start to supply first the nearby water stations in Metro

Manila, and Laguna, where the factory was located as the primary

target market. As the business progress, the company aims to expand

the products to not only bottles but to cups with lids, wrappers, bags,

straws, and other containers as well.

In order to catch the attention of the market, online

advertising shall be used to infiltrate a large audience. With the use of

Social Media, SeaPaul will be known to be an ethical and eco-friendly

product, thus increasing the brand awareness and reputation of the

company. Booths shall be put up in several malls in Metro Manila to

bring in customers and to see the product in person. An assumed initial

capital of 5,100,000 Philippine Pesos will be needed for the

establishment of the business. In the year 2020, The company aims to

supply at least 150,000 bottled waters at a cost of 50 each to reach the

expected sales projection of 8,400,000 pesos. SeaPaul Inc. has strong

devotion and initiative in eradicating the wastes of the ecosystem. As

part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, the company does not only

aim to bring convenience to its customers but also provide a more

5
ethical and biodegradable substitute to plastic.

Market Overview

Being eco-friendly goes far beyond just turning off the lights

when you leave the room. It is about changing the purpose of how you

live (Hughes, n.d.). Improper disposal of waste can be harmful to the

environment and people not just physically, but through air and water

(Datukon, 2016). SeaPaul Inc. is a company that offers eco-friendly

products that are made of algae or seaweed. One of which is ECH²O. It

is a bottle that possesses the physical characteristics of a plastic bottle

but made with a different material. The members of the business chose

algae as the main material because it decomposes faster and is a safer

option compared to plastic.

The researchers believe that there is a need for this product

because it can improve the well being of the environment. Different

plastic waste is seen around the country that will take a longer amount

of time to decay. According to Leblanc (2018), plastic bottles take 450

years or more to decompose. However, seaweed or algae in its initial

form may take approximately 6 months (Duvauchelle, 2017). The

market has seen bottles that most of the company’s competitors

produce. They are also eco-friendly brands. However, their bottles are
San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

made from stainless steel, a material that is heavier than what ECH²O
6
is made of. Using light weight materials will also be convenient for the

buyers to carry around. There have been researches made about

bottles made from algae. However, the market has not seen a product

like ECH²O yet.

Competitive Rivalry

SeaPaul Inc has a good number of competitors when it

comes to being an eco-friendly company. Locally, those would include

Go Zero and Sip PH while Klean Kanteen and Sigg are some

competitors globally. All those brands have their choice of material in

common which is usually stainless steel. That is where ECHO stands

out being the first company to produce a product that is made from

natural resources therefore, not harming the environment during

disposal. There is a low to moderate threat with both local and global

competitors because of the uniqueness of ECHO.

Threat of New Entrants

Being new in the industry, there are threats and possible

solutions that the company must consider. These threats include the

lack of brand awareness. A new business must make a name for itself

in order to catch the curiosity of the public. Customers usually try out a

brand and stick to it if the product meets their preference. Another

threat is that since the business is new, not a lot of people are aware of

the products and what the brand stands for. Customers will usually go

for the products that they have already tested rather than trying a new

product. There is a moderate threat of new entrants because the

company will need to make sure that they are using effective marketing

strategies to make a name for itself.

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

Threat of Substitution
8
There are already many known water brands in the

market like Summit, Absolute, and Nature’s Spring. This is why

customers may choose those existing brands given the fact that the

price is lower compared to ECHO’s price. However, ECHO’s goal is to

sustain the needs of the customers while helping the environment.

There is a low to moderate threat of substitution because it depends on

the buyer’s preferences.

Bargaining Power of Buyers

SeaPaul Inc. is a company that manufactures and

supplies its products to the market. The company’s buyers are not only

limited to the general public but it also includes water companies that

are willing to purchase SeaPaul Inc’s ECHO to spread brand

awareness. The company must build loyal relationships with said water

companies that may turn in to potential partners in order to regularize

the transactions between both parties. There is a low threat of the

bargaining power of buyers since there is a fixed price that is based on

the product’s raw materials and the process it undergoes.

Bargaining Power of Suppliers

SeaPaul Inc’s ECHO is made from algae or seaweed.

Suppliers of the company will be local fishermen and wet markets to

attain the main material of the product at a sufficient price. There is a

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

moderate threat of the bargaining power of suppliers since the company

9
is new, the owners must search for more suppliers that will meet the

company’s standards to maintain the quality of the products.

Strengths

SeaPaul Inc. may be a new business in the industry, but the

company has its own advantages over existing companies. First and

foremost, SeaPaul Inc. is the only company in the Philippines that

promotes anti pollution and toxic waste prevention through the product

itself since it is made from natural resources that will not harm the

environment when disposed. ECHO is made from algae or commonly

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

known as “seaweed” thus, making the product biodegradable and does

10
not use any chemicals. Customers will also become more aware about

the state of the environment once the product is used and disposed.

ECHO provides strength in terms of spreading the message to the

consumers about the benefits of eco-friendly products.

Weaknesses

Since SeaPaul Inc is only starting to enter the industry, the

company will lack brand awareness. In order for the company to build

awareness and gather potential customers, efficient marketing

strategies must be done to make a name for itself. Manpower is also

limited due to the same reason, being a new business.

Opportunities

Opportunity refers to favourable situations for SeaPaul Inc.

Acquiring higher income due to market expansion from Metro Manila to

nationwide will offer higher opportunities for the business. Once the

initial consumers are more aware of the brand and what it stands for,

they are able to make recommendations to more potential customers

which will help with the company’s income as well. Another opportunity

is that SeaPaul Inc is open to collaborating with well known companies

to attend to the needs and wants of the market while attaining the

company’s goal of helping the environment by slowly eliminating the

use of plastic in different companies.

San Beda College Alabang

Threats
11
Threats are unfortunate tendencies that could lead to negative

outcomes of the company. Though ECHO is a unique product in the

eyes of the market, it is not the only eco-friendly product that is

available. Customers might stick to choosing well known competitors if

the company does not make its way through the market. In addition,

customer’s preferences may change. Lastly, it is possible that there will

be a shortage of supply for seaweed in the long run since it is a natural

resource.

water consumed globally for the past ten years by leading countries
12
such as United States, China, Brazil, Thailand, India, Indonesia,

Mexico, Italy, Germany, and France. The researchers then converted

the millions in gallons to 500 milliliters. Due to the lack of Philippine

studies concerning the production and consumption of bottled waters,

the researchers looked for credible and applicable global sources since

there are no proven differences between the water drinking habits of

the foreign group and local group and that water is a basic need that is

essential and demanded by every member of the population

The researchers used the Linear Regression Method to

identify the projected demand of bottled waters. It is basically used in

predictive analysis as it determines future point estimates, and the

modelling of a relationship between an independent and dependent

variable (Statistic Solutions, 2019). The table below shows the global
13
projected demand in 500 millilitres for the next five years. Furthermore,

the population of Metro Manila which is where the company's target

market shall be located was then compared and divided to the

population of the leading countries provided in the historical demand in

order to get a conservative rate of 0.03%. Thus, with the projected

demand of Metro Manila on hand, the researchers computed for its

0.06% in order to find out the product's projected demand in 500

milliliters for the first year. Moreover, ECH²O projected demand shall

increase by 2% for the succeeding years due to the expansion of

market share and brand awareness

Demand Analysis

As shown in the Historical Demand Table, the increase in

the demand for bottled water is evident for the last 10 years. It shows

that the demand for year 2008 is 398,957,987 in 500 milliliters and in

year 2017, it has reached 753,717,527 in 500 milliliters . As for the

Projected Demand, the researchers used the Linear Regression

Method, to forecast or predict the annual demand for the next five

years. Thus, results show that for year 2020, the product ECH²O's

projected demand in 500 milliliters is 147,191 and as of 2024, the

demand increases to 406,895. This means that there is a growth in the

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

customer consumption of bottled water. The demand for bottled waters

14
only increases as the years go by. There is an increase in the

willingness and the ability of the consumers to buy the good. The

market shall be willing to purchase the product ECH²O, because it is a

basic need for every member of the population.

Target Market Profile

SeaPaul Inc. is a company that promotes environmental

friendly products. ECH²O is a bottle that has the physical characteristics

of a plastic water bottle but it is made of algae or commonly known as

“seaweed”. The company manufactures products to ensure that the

quality is nothing less than the customer’s expectations. SeaPaul Inc.

aims to provide customers with products that are practical and safe for

the environment after disposal.

The target market includes students, athletes, employees,

teachers, business owners, and professionals. Water consumption is a

basic essential. The company will first produce individual bottles of their

own. Therefore, SeaPaul Inc.’s target market initially focuses on the

general public. Members of the company plan to supply products to

bigger water stations such as Crystal Clear, AquaBest, Nature’s Spring,

and the like as the business progresses. By supplying our products to

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

bigger water stations, elimination of plastic containers slowly occurs—

15
which is part of the company’s goals.

SeaPaul Inc. aims to provide customers with products that

are useful and safe for the environment. The members of SeaPaul Inc.

will start small by attending to individual customer’s preferences. The

larger market, namely known water stations, will be given more

attention when the company is ready to expand in to supplying for

them. According to Curtin (2018), nowadays, buyers usually look into

products that are co-friendly. She also mentioned that buyers are also

concerned with where products come from and how they are produced

and tested.

Market Research

The researchers first outlined what their goals for the

business would be and what are the possible needs, wants, and

preferences of the customers. They soon came up with a market survey

that would help them determine what the market is looking for in the

product. The survey was created by the members of the group through

the use of Google Forms to make the analysis of results easier to

understand. The surveys were distributed through social media. This

method was done to reach a larger number of respondents and to

ensure fast collection of results.

Brand Logo
24

The company's logo is simple and very straight to the

point to appeal to the target market and get the message easily across.

The product name ECH²O"" is in bright bold letters, to catch the

attention of the customers. This is to spread brand awareness as one

could easily tell the name of the product. The color green symbolizes,

the company's connection to the environment, as well as its mission to

be eco-friendly. Hence, the letters E, C, and O, or Eco are colored

green. Moreover, the color blue symbolizes water, which presents the

product itself. Thus, the character H, 2, O, or H²O are colored blue.

Combining the two together results to ECH²O. The seaweed character

in the back, symbolizes the main feature of the product, which is that

the bottle container is made of algae and is biodegradable. The black

color symbolizes, initiative and power. The company aims to take

initiative and power in making the environment a better place, thus why

the researchers created a innovative product. On both side of the

25
product name, the company's name and the product description is

indicated to inform the customer's of the manufacturers "SeaPaul Inc's"

and of what they are buying "Mineral Water".

Pricing

For the pricing strategy, SeaPaul will be applying Bundle

Pricing. In a bundle pricing, companies or businesses sell multiple

products, a package or a set, for a lower price than consumers would

have to pay when it is purchased separately. In other terms, the

company will offer a discount when consumers decided to purchase

certain number of products or services. For example, an apple is sold

for 10 pesos but if the consumer wants to buy 5 pieces of apple, the

seller will give a discount of 5 pesos wherein the consumer can buy 5

pieces of apple for 45 pesos only.

Pursuing the Bundle Pricing Strategy has several merits.

One of the merits is that it can enhance the value perception in the sight

of the consumers or the market, since the company is offering the same

quality product for lower rate. Also, this can be applied to both retailers

and usual customers. For the retailers, they would be able to apply

competitive pricing to a bunch of products and outstanding competitors.

And it will reduce cost and time spent for the usual customers. ECH²O,
San Beda College Alabang

which contains 500mL of water, will be sold for 50 pesos each. And
26
SeaPaul offers 20 pesos discount for every 3 purchases of its eco-

Place

To introduce the product as efficient to the markets and

maintain its sustainability, it is important for the company to established

appropriate distribution strategy. Moreover, the place, or the types of

distribution strategy, is one of the major 4P’s of the Marketing Mix.

SeaPaul’s ECH²O will be distributed directly and indirectly. For the

indirect distribution, the product will be sold through several channels

such as supermarkets and convenience stores around the Metro

Manila. These are SM hypermarkets, Puregold, Robinsons

supermarket, 7/11, Lawson and FamilyMart. On the other hand,

SeaPaul will prepare a direct distribution in which the product will be

sold directly to the end user. It can be purchased from SeaPaul’s booth,

located inside the major malls of manila, or from SeaPaul’s official

27
website. The factory will be built at Cabuyao, Laguna. And ECH²O will

be delivered to the entire Metro Manila, which is the Capital District,

Eastern Manila District, Northern Manila District, and Southern Manila

District.

In summary, SeaPaul targets the customer broadly.

ECH²O, the algae made eco-friendly bottles costs higher than the usual

plastic bottles. But the company expects for the higher turnover and

hence a higher margin for ECH²O carries its great potential of

diminishing plastic wastes that is considered harmful for the earth.

Promotion

Since SeaPaul Inc. is just a new company in the market,

its promotion strategies should be catchy and unique in order to build

good relationship to its potential market. Yet, it also should be cost less

as much as possible to avoid too much expense. Here are the following

possible promotion strategies the company can do:

Use of different social media platforms

Social media platforms are the most applicable tool of

advertisement in this generation. Just one click, everything is available

already. Using this platform is the best way to reach out potential

buyers across the nation since most of the people can now easily
28
access in the world wide web. Also, using social medias as an

advertisement tool is cheaper than others. You can just post your

product and add some video at a very low cost.

Promodizers

Just like in malls, doing some demonstration of a product

in a live audience, can also be done by the company. The company will

tell product’s features and materials used to made it so that the market

will know more about the product and tell its contribution to the

preservation of environment especially in massive improper plastic

disposal. Also, to tell them that this is the very first water bottle that is

made from algae or seaweeds that can be disposed without harming

the environment.

Market Risks

This section will show the possible risks that the company

might encounter in the market during business operation. These risks

are the changes in costumer’s preferences, possible shortage of

seaweed or algae (production risk), and the presence of popular and

well-known competitor. Each risk will be explained as the discussion

goes on.

Change in Customer’s Preferences

Introducing a new product to the market is very hard to

get potential markets. Buyers are usually based their interest in a

particular product brand name, durability, appearance, and price. New

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

product need some very good promotional strategies to meet customer

30
satisfaction. That is why it is really needed to have a catchy and unique

advertisement to have an impact to them.

Possible Shortage of Seaweeds or Algae (Production Risk)

Since it is the first company to introduce algae water

bottles, it may cause some risks in the production of the company’s

product. Even though the Philippines is an archipelago, supplying a

high population can cause shortage in demand. It may result to

shortage of seaweed which is the main ingredient to make and it can

affect the earnings of the company due to lack of production.

Presence of Popular and Well-Known Competitor

Starting a new business within the existing industry is very

hard. Since SeaPaul is a new company, facing other manufacturing

companies that are already in the industry will be a very challenging

objective to do. Most leading water bottle company providers have the

highest benchmark in the market. That is why it is a market risk for the

company because there will be a tendency that the company will only

have the lowest benchmark in the competition.

Technical Description
Product Concept

ECH²O is a

biodegradable bottle that is seaweed

or algae based. It has the physical

characteristics of a plastic bottle

without the actual plastic. This way, it

will not take a long amount of time to

decompose. Each bottle can hold 500

ml but will have a variety of sizes as

the business progresses. SeaPaul

Inc.’s tagline is “Sea the difference”.

The word “sea” was used to

emphasize where the raw material of

our product is coming from. If

customers will avail the product, the

owners want to give out the message

that ECH²O is really helping the

environment by lessening the use of

plastic and its disposal.

Benefits, Attributes, and Features

32
ECH²O is unlike other bottled water brands, it is not made

of plastic but rather algae thus providing a more ethical, and eco-

friendly method of consuming bottled water. It uses a biodegradable

container which gives the convenience of plastic without adding waste

to the environment. Since it is made of algae, it can easily decay or be

broken down. The benefits of using biodegradable products are that it

lessens the production of landfills instead it acts as compost waste by

finding the right amount of air and moisture of the products so that it

can break down easily. In efforts to reduce the impact of plastic

pollution, biodegradable plastic has been developed, which has a

shorter lifespan than conventional plastic (Algal Solutions, 2018). Aside

from the Bioplastic container, SeaPaul also provides mineral water that

is consider to be rich in minerals such as zinc, calcium, potassium, and

magnesium since it is found underground. These minerals help in

providing a healthier body by strengthening bones and muscles,

reduces risk of heart disease, maintaining blood pressure, providing a

better metabolism, and so on (Water Library, 2017)

Raw Materials
37
Red Algae or Red Seaweed

The red seaweed is the most essential component in

making algae-based water bottle. This seaweed can be turn into agar

powder. Agar powder is a 100% seaweed powder can be a substitute to

make an algae-based water bottle container in case of shortage in

supply of seaweeds in the market. This agar powder is also a substitute

ingredient for those who are vegetarian. To make an agar powder from

red seaweed, there are some steps must be followed. According to the

article entitled “How does agar powder produced” the following steps

are the process in making agar powder (1) Drying of red seaweed,

once the seaweeds were collected, they will place under the sun to dry

(2)Alkalinization of algae, when the algae were dried already, it will be

placed in a container with very hot water in which an alkali product,

such as caustic soda, has been poured. (3)Washing and bleaching

with cold water, the algae will be washed with cold water to remove all

impurities. Sulfuric acid is added to dis-alcalinize them and sodium

hypochlorite for bleaching them. Finally, they will be cleaned with cold

water after. (4) Extraction by Cooking, the product will be extracted by

subjecting the washed and bleached algae to a process of cooking for

two hours. (5) Filtering, the filtering aims to separate the product from

other waste such as rocks, shells, dirt, and etc. This can be
San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

accomplished by passing the water with the algae thorough different

38
filtering tanks. (6) Gelling, this process intended to bring the product to

the texture of a gel. To do this, the algae are cooled by different

processes from 80 to 25 degrees Celsius. This is the processes to

make an Agar powder, but it can be also the process on how to directly

use the red seaweed as the main raw material because it has to pass

through these processes too. Agar powder is only substitute product

only if the company has shortage in supply.

Management Aspect 44
Company Profile And Logo

SeaPaul Inc. is a company that produces environmental

friendly products to lessen the use and disposal of plastic specifically.

Their products are algae based which makes decomposition a lot faster

and safer for the environment than plastic. SeaPaul Inc. is composed of

five members, all of which are students from the Accountancy,

Business, and Management strand of San Beda College Alabang. The

company’s initial product is ECH²O—a bottle that has the same

physical characteristics as a plastic bottle but made with a different

material. The logo is simple and easy for the market to understand. The

color green was used for the letters “E”, “C”, and “O” to emphasize that

the product is eco-friendly while blue was used for “H’, “2”, and “O” to

represent water. The seaweed is black because according to ____ the

color black means power, protection, and initiative. It has the name of
45
the company and what the customer is getting, which is mineral water

on both ends of the logo. SeaPaul Inc.’s tagline is “Sea the Difference”.

The word “sea” was used to show where the material being used for the

product is taken from. Since the company’s goal is to lessen the use of

plastic, the customers will be able to see the difference in the

environment a step at a time with the help of their products.

Orientation
Orientation is planned introductory or primary stage in the 57

process of new personnel assimilation, and a part of their continuous

socialization inside an organization. Orientation contains four major

objectives; (1) To gain employee commitment, (2) To reduce new

employees’ anxiety, (3) To help new employees to understand the

organization and its matters, (4) To convey new employees’

expectations towards the job or an organization. The HR (Human

Resource) department and other personnel at higher position, such as

manager or supervisor, has to take the responsibility and work as a

team to build an effective orientation.

SeaPaul Inc. prepared two kinds of an orientation for the

newly hired employees. The general orientation which is scheduled at

the first day of their workplace and the weekly orientation for the first

two months. The orientation is meant to educate employees in terms of

corporate governance, goals and responsibility of the job position and

company, also to provide sufficient time to answer the any questions

such as regarding the payroll and benefit information.

The general orientation during the first day of work

contains information in areas such as, the work environment, the new

job description, safety and personal protective equipment (PPE),

benefits and its eligibility, new employee’s managers and coworkers,

58
For the weekly orientation, detailed information about the job,

department, and the company, as well as the questions of the new

employees will be tackled. This includes the skill and career

development of each individual employees. SeaPaul believes that long-

term orientation instead of one-day orientation will welcome the new

employees and assuredly immersed them in the organization’s

operation, culture, values and mission.

Performance Appraisal

The company plans to set an evaluation form in order to

further understand the different capabilities, skills, and talents of its

employees. This form will also serves as a basis for possible promotion

depending on how good their performance were. Each employee will be

evaluated based on the three main categories: human relation,

professionalism, and quality of work. These are the categories that will

help the company to determine either to promote the employee or not. If

the employee is underperformed the company will send a warning for

termination and it will only take three warnings.

Government

SeaPaul Inc. aims to lessen and soon eliminate the use of

plastic starting with ECHO. The product is not only beneficial for the

environment but also to the country’s government. Since SeaPaul Inc.

is a company that produces biodegradable products, the company can

collaborate with the government’s programs to take action on improving

the state of the environment. These programs can include campaigns,

rehabilitation activities, or supplying to government agencies to lessen

plastic waste. The rules and regulations implemented by the

government is also a factor that helps the company. If the public will

simply follow and be more aware of the rules regarding the

environment, SeaPaul Inc will also be of benefit because the demand of

products will rise while the amount of plastic waste goes down.

Customer

The perceived value that the customers experience

through interaction with the company or its products is significant.

Customer’s benefits include resolution of a particular issue, and the

achievement of an urged result or fulfillment of an obligation through

the purchase. In the case of SeaPaul’s ECH²O, customers are likely to

San Beda College Alabang
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa

participate in green initiatives and the fact that they are involved in
70
such movements are already a great benefit to them. Nielsen (2014),

stated that people across the countries agreed on protecting and

enhancing the environment as it is where all human being belong.

Also, more than half of global consumers are willing to pay a premium

for products or a company that has influences in eco-friendly

movement. Therefore, purchasing a product that could solve the

pollution issue or just simply lessen the harm to the environment is an

important engagement for the customers. It can fulfill their desire to be

eco-friendly which will lead to a high level of customer satisfaction and

a sense of superiority in terms of caring and loving the nature. SeaPaul

sets the platform wherein the environment will surely be improved and

the people will be filled with love

Community

Echo will be a great benefit to the community because of

its unique features and materials used to made the product. The main

problem that people encounter today is the massive improper disposal

of plastic waste. It is because most of the people today are lack of

discipline resulting to destruction of unified order in a community. Also,

it is cause by the people who cannot simply follow the segregation

signage that are already embodied to the trash bin resulting into

improper segregation that may lead into more problem in the

71
community. These unethical routine can greatly affect the community

and its people because even if one person did it, everyone will do it also

resulting into one trash into millions of trashes. But the company has

come up to the solution that can help the community, Echo. The reason

why the company has come up to this idea is because, most of the

company today introduced already some eco-friendly product such as

eco-bags, paper bags, metal straws, bamboo straws, and many more.

But why stop there, this is why the company wants to introduce a new

product which is the Echo, an algae-based water bottle product. The

company choose water bottle because water is the one of the basic

needs of the people and some of them are not bringing their own water

container and the tendency is that they will buy at any stores nearby.

Water bottles that are made of plastic. Since Echo is made up of

biodegradable material, the community will not have any problem in

disposing them properly. People can throw it anywhere they wanted to

without harming the members of the community. Because the product

has its own capability to decompose once it was used. Unlike other

plastic water bottles it will take years before it will fully decomposed.

Environment
72
The researchers have conducted this study to benefit the

environment and to lessen the pollution that had been growing for the

past decades. The importance of the study is to see how the eco-

friendly bottles will affect the environment in a good way. This study will

benefit both the environment and the reduction of toxic waste.

Furthermore, as the researchers conduct this study, it may have a

positive effect towards the environment. In fact, it can change the way

people see the environment and may cause them to stop using toxic

materials and start leaning towards eco-friendly alternatives. For

example, if people stop using plastic and instead start using alternative

materials the pollution will decrease to a small amount. In conclusion,

this study is used to see how much these eco-friendly bottles may affect

the environment and lessen the pollution to a minimum and considering

that this study will start with bottles, with good results it may start

expanding into other alternatives that may be of benefit towards the

environment.

Proponents
73
The researchers proposed the current business with the

intention of contributing to the eradication of plastic pollution. As part of

their corporate social responsibility, they proposed the seaweed-made

water bottle. This enables them to fulfill their mission in saving the

environment. Furthermore, the proponents strongly believe that it is

their duty and responsibility to create an ethical and eco-friendly

product that shall provide convenience for the customers. It also serves

contribution to the development of their brand awareness and a positive

reputation as they enter the industry.
