READ
JAR OF WORDS
An estimation jar is always a fun activity in the library. For I Love to Read Month in
the library, or Valentine’s Day in the classroom, you can make a quick JAR OF WORDS.
In the library, I always give the jar as part of the prize, along with a free book. I
usually recycle a jar from Costco – soak it to get off the labels and clean it really
well! Get some candy hearts and you’re ready.

Some tips for using the JAR OF WORDS:

• Count your candy hearts BEFORE you put them in the jar. Keep the number in a
safe place. This makes finding the winner easier in the end!

• Print the labels in color and attach them to the outside of the jar.

• Print the estimation slips on colorful paper. I just do enough for every student to
have one estimation.

• Have a basket or another jar nearby to collect the estimations. Because I have
nearly 500 students, this gets full fast. I usually have the jar out for a week, so I
go through estimations every afternoon (after the kids are gone!), saving the ones
that are closest to the correct answer.

• Make a big deal about the winner & the correct number – this is good information
for your morning announcements!

About The
Trapped Librarian

Hello fellow Teacher Librarians!

My name is Laura Trapp and I have been an elementary school librarian since
2005. I was a first grade teacher for 9 years and taught grades 3, 4, & 5
before that, for a grand total of over 29 years of elementary teaching
experience. I feel so fortunate to live in the beautiful state of Montana, where
I love spending time outdoors hiking, kayaking, and skiing.
I love my job, but we all know it can sometimes get overwhelming. Between your
own teaching duties, supporting your teachers in their instruction and your
students in their learning, as well as managing your diverse library collections &
activities – you have your hands full! My goal is to give you high quality
materials to save you time and help you make your library the vibrant center of
your school that it should be!
I am passionate about creating opportunities for my students and I to connect
with others outside of our school library. If you have a project or an idea that
we can be part of, I hope you’ll get in touch!
Be well and have fun!
Laura
