All students are to read any grade-level appropriate chapter book
for 20-30 minutes each night.

Steps for the Activity

➢ Use a sheet of paper as a title page to write the name of the

book, your name, the due date and your school as shown in the
example.
➢ Use a second sheet of paper for each week as a title page to
write the name of the chapter you read, the pages, and the date
as shown in the example
➢ Every week before reading, students should write a SMART goal
using the format shown in classes.
➢ Then, students are going to response in a sheet of paper the
activities “before you read” which are at the end of the book.
➢ After that, Read the chapter of the book and use the Reading
Word Map to get unknown words from the chapter.
➢ Fill up the Reading Word Map as shown in classes with the
number of words you set on your SMART goal.
➢ Read the chapter again as many times as you need. (Try not to
use a translator)
➢ Then, use a sheet of paper to answer the questions “after you
read” which are at the end of the book. Your response should
show that you spent time thinking about what you read.
Although a certain length is not required, your response should
fully address the topic you have chosen. All responses MUST be
in neat, block handwriting with grade level words spelled
correctly. Remember to use descriptive language. Extra points
will be given to students who take risks with new vocabulary and
show higher level thinking skills.
➢ Finally, answer the questions of the learner’s diary.
