GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS UNIT PLAN FOR ONLINE LEARNING

Unit Title: Ratios and Proportions Name: Mamta Matai

Content Area: Math Grade Level: 7th
Approximate Time Frame: 2 to 2.5 weeks
Essential Vocabulary: Ratio, Equivalent ratios, Complex Ratio, Ratio table, Complex Ratio, Ratio table, scaling, rate, unit rate, per,

equivalent rates, percent, conversion factor, proportion, principal, simple interest, compound interest, origin, co-ordinate plane, constant

of proportionality.
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Key Standards: Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems

CA.CC 7.RP.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas, and other quantities measures in

like or different units

CA.CC 7.RP.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.

 CA.CC 7.RP.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on

a co-ordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.

 CA.CC 7.RP.2b Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of

proportional relationships.
CA.CC 7.RP.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.

 CA.CC 7.EE.3 Solve multistep real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole

numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert

between forms as appropriate, and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will develop a relationship understanding and be able to apply mathematical knowledge to analyze and model

mathematical relationships in the context of a situation to make a well- informed and calculated decision. They will be able to apply ratio

and rate concepts to establish equations with dependent and independent variables to represent, interpret, and solve real-world and

mathematical problems. Students will acquire proportional and percentage reasoning which is useful in many real-life situations including

making price comparisons, determining the best buy, finding gas-mileage, scaling recipes up or down, distance on maps, calculating tips,

taxes, discounts, simple interest, unit conversion, and money exchange thus nurturing them to become smarter consumers.
Unit Summary:

In this two-week unit subdivided into six lessons, students will build upon previous knowledge of ratios and rates to formally

define proportional relationships. They will understand the use of unit rates for better decision making. Using these skills, students will

explore how tables, graphs, and equations can represent proportional relationships. Students will use proportions and percent to solve

real-world problems. Analyzing ratios, percent, and proportional relationships are critical in the middle school years because it is through
this unit that students' understanding of multiplicative comparison is scaffolded upon. This unit will serve as an essential foundation for

algebraic functions and trigonometric ratios in high school. Students will gain an understanding of the usefulness of ratios in daily, real-

life situations, making sense of various derived attributes like speed, acceleration, etc. in sciences and will develop the ability to interpret

various descriptive statistical data.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the topic by completing a performance task as a culminating activity that will

entail them to use their newly acquired skills. As a performance task requirement, students will create an “Ultimate Healthy Smoothie,"

made of real foods, that has the right proportion of all the major nutrients needed to live a healthy life. Additionally, they will design a

brochure which shall include the recipe guided by the task rubric. The performance task is directed to accentuate real-life application of

the topic and allow students to show their creativity.

In order to deliver a meaningful online learning experience, both synchronous and asynchronous teaching methods are

incorporated in this unit. Appropriate formative assessments using technological tools like Quizziz, Kahoot, and ASSISTments will

inform instruction for intervention based on individual students’ needs. The reports generated from these applications can potentially

serve to replace the data that otherwise is secured from observational findings in a brick and mortar environment. Using the application of

"Flipgrid" will facilitate social learning and will provide an opportunity for reflection and communication. One the one hand, interactive

activities on simulation software "Desmos" and "GeoGebra" will provide opportunities for visualizing mathematical equations to enhance

critical thinking. On the other hand, these applications will provide opportunities to monitor student activity to effectuate “minds-on”

engagement. Edpuzzle videos will be used to reinforce accountability and self-paced learning. All these technological applications
seamlessly integrate with the learning management system, google classroom used for the unit.
