1.(40 puntos) Consider the process shown in the figure. The tank is spherical with radius of 4 ft. The
nominal mass flow into and out of the tank is 30000 lb/hr, the density of the liquid is 70 lb/ft3, and
the steady state level is 5 ft. The volume of the sphere is given by 4 π r 3 /3 . The relation between
volume and height is given by

V (t )=V T
[ ]
h2 (t)(3r −h( t))
4r 3
and the flows through the valves are given by
w (t)=500C V vp(t) √ G f Δ P (t)
Where, r is the radius of the sphere (ft), V(t) is the volume of liquid in the tank (ft3), VT total volume
of the tank (ft3), h(t) is the height of liquid in the tank (ft), w(t) is the mass flow rate (lb,hr), CV is the
valve coefficient (gpm/psi0.5), CV1=20.2 and CV2=28.0. Δ P (t) Is the pressure drop across the
valve, psi, Gf is the specific gravity of the fluid, and vp(t) is the valve position as fraction of valve
opening.
The pressure above the liquid level is maintained constant at a value of 50 psig. Obtain the model
that relates the level of liquid in the tank to changes in the position of valves 1 and 2. Linearize the
model and transform it using Laplace.

2.(35 puntos) A system is described by the state variable equations:

[ 1 1 0
][]−1
ẋ= −2 0 4 x + 0 u(t)
6 2 10 1
y (t )=[ 0 1 0 ] x (t)
Determine the function y(t) when u(t) is a step change and the initial conditions are x(0)=0.

3.(25 puntos) Draw the response of the system to a unit step change. Determine all the
characteristics of the response.
