1. Biochemical reactors are used in a wide variety of processes, from waste treatment to alcohol
fermentation. Biomass consume substrate and produce more biomass. Consider the bioreactor
shown in the figure, where x1 is the biomass concentration, x2 is the substrate concentration, F is the
volumetric flow, and V is the volume of the tank.

The speed at which the biomass grows is given by

r 1=μ x 1
where μ is the specific growth rate, which is given by the substrate inhibition kinetics:
μ max x 2
μ=
k m + x 2+ k 1 x 22
The speed at which substrate is consumed can be found by the efficiency relation Y=r1/r2.
If you define the dilution rate as D=F/V, and considering the following parameters and steady state
values:
−1
D=0.3 hr x2fs =4.0 g/ l x1fs =0 x 1s =1.530163 g /l x 2s =0.174593 g/ l
−1
μ max=0.53hr k m=0.12 g/ l k 1=0.4545l / g Y =0.4
a)Write a model for the system, describing how the biomass and substrate concentration varies with
time.
b)Linearize the system around the steady state and write it in state-space form.

2.A system is described by the state variable equations:

3 u (t)

Determine the function x(t) when u(t) is a step change .
3.For the system
Y (s) 4

R (s) 2s+3
find and plot the function y(t), when r(t) is given by

{ }
1.5t 0⩽t <5
7.5 5⩽t <7
4.5−t 7⩽t <10
r (t)= t−5.5 10⩽t <13
7.5 13⩽t <15
30−1.5t 15⩽t <20
