Report the following explanations about why the stokers were asking for money.

JUAN GARCIA: “My wife didn’t feel well last night and I decided to take her to hospital to have
her treated. The doctor ordered different analyses on her and she has to see him tomorrow
again and he will then tell her if she needs some extra medicine. So I would need an advance
of my money in case we have to buy some pills or something:”

Juan Garcia said that his wife hadn’t felt well the night before so he had decided to take her to
hospital to have her treated. He also said that the doctor had ordered different analyses on her
and that she had to see him the following day again so that he would then tell her if she
needed some extra medicine. So she finally said that he needed an advance of his money in
case they had to buy some pills or something.

MANUEL MENDOZA: “My eldest son is under a medical treatment as he has a bad lung. It
means a series of vaccines every three days. We are almost finishing but I still need to pay for
the last dose. I need the money to get the vaccine.”

Manuel Mendoza said that his eldest son was under medical treatment as he had a bad lung.

MIGUEL AYALA: “My mother is an old lady and needs vitamins as she can’t walk well because
her legs are not strong enough. I’m going to take her to the doctor’s tomorrow and I’m sure he
will prescribe more tests and medicine. You see, I don’t think the money I have left will be
enough:”

Miguel Ayala told Larry that his mother was an old lady and she needed vitamins as she
couldn’t walk well because her legs were not strong enough. He explained that he was going
to take her to the doctor’s the following day and he was sure the doctor would prescribe more
tests and medicine. He said he didn’t think the money he had left would be enough.

Report the following conversations as narrative pieces.


Conversation 1
Juan García: “Can I have an advance of my money?”
Larry: “Sorry, Juan. Look at the notice. There is a new rule in the company No more
advances. Employees will only be paid on the 5th and 20th of each month. I can’t give
you your money:”
Juan García: “I’m quiting, then. I have a job offer in another gas plant. Can you give me
my money?”
Larry: “Don`t do this, Juan. You will lose the job and I don’t know if you will get it back.
Think about what you are going to do carefully.”

Juan Garcia asked Larry to give him an advance of his money but Larry refused and
asked him to look at the notice because there was a new rule in the company. The rule
ordered Larry not to give him any more advances. It said that employees would only
be paid on the 5th and 20th of each month. Larry explained to Juan that he couldn’t give
him his money.

Conversation 2
Miguel Anaya: “I must buy medicine for my children.”
Larry: “But it is the 10th today. I can’t give you any money.”
Miguel Anaya: “Give me my money because this is an emergency”.
Larry: The company will not advance any more money. Read the notice on the board
and you will understand.”
Miguel Anaya: “Can’t you make an exception just this time?”
Larry: “Sorry. No.”

Miguel Anaya said that he must buy medicine for his children. Larry explained to him
that it was the 10h and he couldn’t give him any money. Miguel asked him to give him
his money because it was an emergency. Larry told him that the company would not
advance any more money and ordered him to read the notice on the board and so he
would understand. Miguel asked Larry to make an exception just that time but Larry
refused.

Conversation 3
Larry: “Sir, can I have a word with you? We have a problem with the stokers.
Manager: “Don’t let them bother you. Just say no”
Larry: “Could you be a bit more flexible with the new rule’”
Manager: “No more advances is the rule”.

Larry asked the manager to have a word with him because they had a problem with
the stokers. The manager ordered him not to let them bother him, to just say no.
Larry asked him to be a bit more flexible with the new rule but the manager refused
because the rule was no more advances.
