Abstract

The research aimed to identify external motivational and de-motivational factors

that affect second language learning. The subject under focus was English (English
as a second language). The sample of the study consisted of 250 students of
Intermediate level randomly selected from five different colleges. The instrument of
the study consisted of close-ended questionnaire. It was found that number of
motivational and de-motivational factors has a significant effect either directly or
indirectly on students’ learning. It was also revealed that one of important factor is
teachers’ attitude and behavior, and then comes classroom environment. Support
from parents and family and boring text books and course content has also
significant effects on students’ demotivation to learn. The research recommended
that teachers should adopt different strategies to nurture students’ motivation and
teachers should facilitate student learning. Moreover, healthy communication and
collaborative classroom environment helps to enhance students’ motivation to learn.
Teacher should use varied teaching methodologies to enhance students’
motivational level, and course content should also be revised and updated according
to new designs and patterns so that students feel motivated to learn second
language. Institutes and administration should realistically consider these factors
while making strategies and policies to enhance students’ learning.
