Exfoliation - A Cup of Secret to Remove Dead Skin Cells

There are various beauty jargons and hot topics like cleansing, hydration, cancer
prevention, sunscreens, etc. roaming in the colossal skin care world. But out of all these,
the most used and yet exploited one is Exfoliation. If you are not completely aware of it,
then let me inform you about it.

What is Exfoliation?

It is the process of removing dead cells by means of exfoliants. To achieve a younger

looking, fresh and glowing skin, exfoliation is indispensable.

You can get an Exfoliator from the market as easily as you get a face wash. There are
two types of Exfoliators; “Chemical”, which is made up of certain chemical ingredients
and works itself by dissolving dead cells. The other is “Physical” which is made up of less
chemical ingredients and you have to do the work by gently rubbing it against your skin.
Choose wisely!

Why is it important?

New cells are constantly being sent to the upper surface of our skin after being
generated at the lower surface. As they move upwards, the old cells near the top die
and are pushed towards the outer skin. From there, they shed off.

With the passage of time, shedding of dead cells slows down and they begin to
accumulate on the skin, resulting in a dull and rough appearance. So, it becomes
imperative to remove this dead layer of your skin periodically by exfoliating it for a
smooth healthier skin.

How to exfoliate?

On the body except the face, apply an exfoliating cleanser on the skin of your choice and
gently scrub it with a foam or brush. On the face, remember to gently rub it only by
using your hands in circular motion. Wash it off with lukewarm water. Afterwards, do
not dry your skin by rubbing instead gently pat it with a clean towel and soon after
drying, moisturize it.

When to exfoliate your skin?

Generally, you should exfoliate on a weekly basis to keep your skin clean and glowing. In
addition, you can also exfoliate:

1. To clean the pores clogged with oil, dirt and dead cells.

2. To delay wrinkles by keeping a smooth, clean skin.

3. To remove left-behind acne marks. Exfoliation encourages the new healthy cell
formation by removing damaged skin cells.

4. To fade pigmentation caused by overexposure to sun and ultraviolet radiations.

Precautionary measures for exfoliation:

• It is essential to carefully choose an Exfoliator, which works best with your skin type,
with the proper knowledge of its ingredients. The wrong choice may lead to severe
consequences.

• Exfoliate only once or maximum twice a week. Over exfoliation leads to damage,
irritated and dry skin, especially in summers.

• There are separate Exfoliators for face and rest of the body. Never use body scrubs
on the face.

• Do not rub the skin too hard as it will only peel off the protective layer instead of
removing dead skin cell layer.

• Do not exfoliate if you’re sunburned or have any open cuts or wounds.
