Slope Stability Analyses

Use figures 4, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 12 to compute the slope stability of translational and rotational soil
slides of the attached paper. Required soil parameters are tabulated in the paper and following
section also. Determine the factor of safety of Soil Slide (SL-3) by Fellenius and Bishop method.
Use (a) manual/excel computation method and (b) Geoslope and/or SLIDE software to determine
the factor of safety. Assume the slope is at dry condition and fully saturated condition.

1. Stability analysis of Soil Slide (SL-1) of Daman

The landslide map (Figure 4) and profile (Figure 10) of the landslide was prepared during the field
visit with the help of measuring tape and Brunton compass. Use the following parameters to
compute the stability number of the translational slide.

Relative Density () = 50-70%

Natural moisture content (n) = 1.519%
Unit weight at 15.19% moisture content () = 1.88t/m3 = 18.8KN/m3

Angle of internal friction () = 35o

Unified Soil Classification Group USCS = SW
Depth of slide, (HR) = 1.3 m
Angle of landslide profile with horizontal (i) = 30

Unit weight of water (w) = 1.0 t/m = 10 KN/m3

Since, b =  - w
Therefore, b = (18.8 - 10.0) KN/m3
= 8.8 KN/m3
2. Stability analysis of Soil Slide (SL-2) of Daman

The landslide map (Figure 5) and profile (Figure 11) of the landslide was prepared during the field
visit with the help of measuring tape and Brunton compass. Use the following parameters to
compute the stability number of the translational slide.

Relative Density () = 50-70 %

Natural moisture content (n) = 20.861%
Unit weight at 20.861% moisture content () = 2.179 t/m3 = 21.79 kN/m3
therefore, angle of internal friction () = 36o
Unified Soil Classification Group (USCS) = SW
Depth of slide (HR) = 1.7 m
Angle of landslide profile with horizontal (i) = 28
Unit weight of water (w) = 1.0 t/ m3 = 10 kN/ m3

3. Stability Analysis of Soil Slide (SL-3) of Daman

The landslide map (Figure 4) and profile (Figure 12) of the landslide was prepared during the field
visit with the help of measuring tape and Brunton compass. The sliding mass is divided into 8
sectors and the standard grid calculates the area. The width of each slide is taken unity. From
laboratory and field test the following parameters were determined.

Natural moisture content = 20.861%

The relative density = 50% to 70%
Therefore, angle of internal friction (') = 33
Unit weight at 20.861% water content () = 2.0 t/m3 = 20 kN/ m3
Unified Soil Classification Group (USCS) = SP
Therefore, effective cohesive strength (c) = 0.5 t/m2 = 5.0 kN/ m2
