On March 9, 2020 Andhra Pradesh (AP) ranked 1st in the country for overall implementation of POSHAN(
Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment) Abhiyaan as per September 2019 progress
report of NITI Aayog, “Transforming Nutrition in India: POSHAN Abhiyaan”.The 2nd anniversary of POSHAN
Abhiyaan is recognized by celebrating Poshan Pakhwada from 8th-22nd March 2020.

The focus area of Poshan Pakhwada 2020 is ‘Men for Nutrition – Increasing Male Engagement in POSHAN
Abhiyaan to Improve Nutritional Indicators‘.It aims to reduce malnutrition from the country in a phased
manner through the life cycle concept, by adopting a synergized & result-oriented approach.

Tamil Nadu tops in Poshan Abhiyaan’s participants list


Tamil Nadu tops the list of the states in terms of the number of participants in the programme.
POSHAN Abhiyaan
It was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8
March, 2018 Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. It is India’s flagship programme to direct the attention of the country
towards the problem of malnutrition & address it in a mission-mode. It is earlier called as National Nutrition
Mission (NNM), since 18th December, 2017.
NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog has played a critical role in shaping the POSHAN
Abhiyaan & it is required to submit implementation status reports of POSHAN Abhiyaan every 6 months to the
Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The goals of POSHAN Abhiyaan
To achieve improvement in the nutritional status of Children from 0-6 years, Adolescent Girls, Pregnant
Women & Lactating Mothers in a time bound manner with fixed targets & aims to bring down stunting of
children in the age group of 0-6 years from 38.4% to 25% by the year 2022.
Strategy/Pillars for implementation of the mission are:
• Inter-sectoral convergence for better service delivery
• Use of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for real time growth monitoring & to track
women & children

Gujarat tops in domestic solar rooftop installations in 2020


Gujarat ranks first in the list for domestic solar rooftop installations, throughout the country with 64
percent of domestic solar installations. Nearly 50,915 domestic solar rooftops have been fixed in the state of
Gujarat with a capacity of 177.67 MW on 2nd March 2020.

• Maharashtra is the second state to top in the domestic solar rooftop installations list with
installation of 5,513 systems on 2nd March 2020.
• About 79,950 systems have been installed throughout the country having a capacity of 322 MW.
Government announces a scheme Surya Gujarat (Surya Urja Rooftop Yojana Gujarat):
This Scheme is announced to provide Solar Rooftop facility to the state of Gujarat.
• Target of the Scheme: The scheme is revealed to provide solar rooftop system to 2 lakh domestic
consumers by the year 2019-2020, and to cover over 8 lakh domestic consumers by 2021-
2022. ₹912 crore has been allotted for the scheme.

• Subsidy: 40% will be available for the solar rooftop up to 3kW and 20% to the solar rooftop of 3kw
to 10kW. The subsidy will be provided through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
• The excess units consumed by the households are purchased at 2.25 per unit.
Benefits of solar rooftop:
• Solar rooftops need only the light from the sun to generate electricity.
• No health hazards are involved and no pollutants are emitted by solar rooftops.
• No extra land is required to set up rooftops.
• This system reduces global warming.

Centre constitutes Delimitation commission for J&K, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal, chaired by
former SC judge Ranjana Prakash Desai
On March 06, 2020, In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Delimitation Act, 2002, the Central
government has set up a Delimitation Commission , headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana
Prakash Desai, for the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies of the Union Territory of
Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and the northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh(AP), Manipur and
Nagaland.

Key Points:
i.The Commission will also comprise of members,viz an Election Commissioner (presently Mr. Sushil Chandra)
and the State Election Commissioners of the respective States and UT,who will be made ex-officio members of
the commission. Ranjana Prakash has been appointed for a period of one year.
ii.The Commission is mandated to delimit the Lok Sabha and Assembly Constituencies in J&K under the
provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act,2019 while the provisions of the Delimitation Act
2002 will delimit Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland. Delimitation was done based on the 2001
census.
The Section 60 of the J&K Reorganisation Act,2019 stipulates that the number of seats in its Legislative
Assembly will be increased to 114, from the present 107. Of these, 24 seats have been reserved for Pakistan
Occupied Kashmir.
iii.Such Delimitation Commissions have been formed 4 times in India – in 1952 under the Delimitation
Commission Act, 1952, in 1963 under Delimitation Commission Act, 1962, in 1973 under Delimitation Act,
1972 and in 2002 under Delimitation Act, 2002.
Delimitation Commission:
It is appointed by the President of India (presently Ram Nath Kovind) and works in collaboration with the
Election Commission of India.
What is Delimitation?
It refers to the act or process of fixing limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country to represent
changes in population.

Why it is needed?
The primary aim of delimitation is to provide equal representation to similar segments of the population. It also
aims at proper division of geographical areas so that one political party does not get an inappropriate
advantage over others in elections.
It also aimed to follow the principle of One vote One value.

Parliament.

Traditional ‘Fagli’ festival celebrated in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur on March 10, 2020
On March 10, 2020, the traditional “Fagli” festival celebrated at kinnaur district in Yangpa village, Himachal
Pradesh. This festival is celebrated to denote the end of the winter and the start of the Spring. It is mainly
celebrated on the moonless night.

• It is also celebrated to receive blessings from Deota(God) for the upcoming harvest season.
• Men start to dance in circles wearing their traditional attire and face masks, where a large number
of local people gather to watch the event.

Jewar Airport, UP receives international recognition for strategic infrastructure


The first phase of Jewar Airport, Uttar Pradesh (UP) has been included in the world’s 100 strategic global
infrastructure projects for the year 2020. It has been recognised in the CG LA Infrastructure List. UP (India) and
Yugoslavia (Europe) have been chosen in the field of aviation category all over the world.
Key Points:
i.13th Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum: The success story of Jewar Airport will be presented by the
UP government in two sessions at the 13th Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum, to be held in New York City,
US (United States) on March 25 to 27, 2020.
ii.About Jewar Airport: The airport, being built by Zurich Airport International AG and 1,334 hectares of
land from 6 villages of Rohi, Parohi, Kishorepur, Dayantpur, Ranhera and Banwari has been acquired in the first
phase for the Jewar International Airport.
iii.The Jewar Airport covers a size of 5000 hectares, construction is going at a rapid pace and the flights will
start operating in the year 2022- 23.
iv.The Airport will boost industrial development in the state and the government is expected to earn more than
Rs 1.10 lakh crore from this project, being built with an investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

v.More than 1 lakh people will get direct & indirect employment in the airport and it will bring an investment of

More than 40% Govt schools in India don’t have electricity & playgrounds: Parliamentary
panel’s “2020-2021 demand for grants for school education”
On March 8,2020 “Demands for Grants 2020-21 Analysis”, conducted by the Parliamentary Standing
Committee on Human Resource Development (HRD)
presented the report pointing that:
• Only 56 % of government schools in the country have electricity with lowest rates in the states of
Manipur and Madhya Pradesh, where less than 20 % of the schools have electricity.
• Similarly, less than 57 % of public schools have a playground. And only 30 % of schools in
Odisha and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have a playground.

Key Points:
i.No electricity, no grounds: Referring the recent Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE)
2017-18 survey data, the panel expressed concern over the critical infrastructure gaps in government schools.
ii.Finance:
• The report also underscored the shortfalls in both budgetary allocation and utilization, which in
turn results in critical infrastructure gaps in Higher secondary schools much more than primary
and secondary schools.
• The report expressed concern that the school budget has been cut by 27%. The allocation
for Central and Centrally Sponsored Schemes have been reduced by 27 %.
iii.Deficit Infrastructure:
• 40 % of schools are uninhabitable, the safety of students and property of schools is under threat.
• Facilities such as ramps and special toilets for differently-abled studentshave been completed in
the government schools of which are less than 5% of proposed infrastructure.
• No additional classrooms have been built in government secondary schools although 1,021 had been
sanctioned for the financial year 2019-20.
• The Committee has expressed lack of efficient progress over the building of classrooms,
laboratories and libraries in secondary schools. The committee is aware of the fact that delay in
completion of infrastructure, to look into the factors impeding the
infrastructure development and resolve them at the earliest.
iv.Dropouts:
• The dropout rate hikes have been observed at the secondary level (class 9-10) at 17% as compared
to 4% in elementary school (class 1-8) and 2% in upper secondary school (class 11-12).

v.Recommendations:
• If the Human Resources Department (HRD) collaborates with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural
Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), for construction of boundary walls and other facilities
for student safety.
• Schools will get solar power and other sources for renewable energy if collaboration with the
Renewable Energy Department is made.
• Implementing additional funds for core schemes like Samagra Shiksha Scheme, of which only
71% is spent, revised and estimated; as on December 31, 2019 the department had spent.

UN adopts political declaration on women’s rights during CSW64 meet in New York, US
On March 10, 2020, The United Nations (UN),an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain
international peace and security, has adopted a stripped-down political declaration, in which they pledged to
step up action to fully implement the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender
equality, agreed 25 years ago. A UN declaration on women is approved every 5 years.

Key Points:
i.CSW in the time of coronavirus: The declaration was adopted during the 64th session of the Commission on
the Status of Women(CSW)held in New York, US(United States), that has been compressed to just one day meet
from a normal 2-week meet due to the global coronavirus outbreak.
The meet was originally set to attend by 12, 000 participants. But, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
urged member states not to send delegations to the UN’s 2nd largest meet-CSW and also he cancelled debates
and other events surrounding the meeting.
The session agreed to fight against human trafficking & modern slavery and other forms of exploitation & also
ensures to provide support, services and for all women victims of violence.
ii.Political declaration: The adopted Political declaration will be in line with the Beijing Declaration and
Platform for Action of 1995, which seeks to enhance the women’s emancipation and advancement around the
globe & it sought to protect the benefits under threat but does not recommend new ways to ensure progress
toward equality.
The adopted text also expressed the UN’s concern that overall, progress has not been expedite enough & also in
some areas progress has been uneven, and that major gaps remain.
It also underscored that no country has fully achieved gender equality, even 25 years after the Beijing summit
1995.

iii.The Government of France has decided to host a follow-up conference in July 2020 to be called”Beijing+25″ ,
which aims to help protect and ensure the gains women have made over the past quarter-century.

EIU’s Inclusive Internet Index 2020:Sweden tops globally;India topped among South Asian
Countries & ranked 46th globally
On March 6, 2020 Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released the 4th iteration of the Inclusive Internet
Index 2020 for 100 countries where India is overall ranked in 46th place & Sweden in 1st place. The index
aims to measure the extent to which the Internet is not only accessible & affordable, but also relevant to all,
allowing usage that enables positive social & economic outcomes at the individual & group level. It is
commissioned by Facebook.

Key Points:
i.Among South Asian countries India ranks first followed by Srilanka, Bangladesh & pakistan.
ii.The 1st country ranked is Sweden, followed by New Zealand(2nd) & the US(3rd). Australia & Denmark both
ranked 4th, followed by South Korea (6th), Canada(7th), the United Kingdom(8th), France(9th) , Spain(10th) &
Pakistan(76th).
iii.Worst countries ranked are Burundi at 100th, Liberia at 99th, Madagascar at 98th, Malawi at 97th & Burkina
Faso at 96th.

1st UNDP Gender Social Norms Index 2020: Almost 90 % of People are biased against women;
Pakistan ranks 1st
On March 5, 2020, According to the 1st edition of ‘Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI) 2020’, released by
the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), about 90 % or 9 in 10 of the world’s population has
some bias against women.
This index studied 75 countries covering over 80 % of the world’s population & measures social beliefs that
obstruct gender equality in areas like politics, work, and education.

Key findings:
i.According to the data presented in the index, nearly half of the people who were included opinion believed
that men are the best political leaders while more than 40 % thought that men make are better business
leaders.
ii.It also stated that 28 % think it is justified for a man to beat his partner & they think that men have more
right to a job when jobs are scarce.
iii.The UNDP set an example that men and women vote the same way, but women are elected to only 24 % of
parliamentary seats worldwide. Also, the index noted that out of 193 countries worldwide, only 10 countries
have women as chairpersons of governments & they are paid less than men to do the same job around the
world.
iv.The most important report of the survey is that there is no perfect gender equality country.Less than 6% of
CEOs in S&P 500 companies are women; while women work more hours than men, this work is more likely to
be unpaid care work.

v.The analysis also highlighted a bias shift in some 30 countries, revealing that while some show
improvements, attitudes in others see to have worsened in recent years.

bias. This was followed by Qatar and Nigeria, where 99.73 % of the people supported bias.
The countries with the least bias towards women are Andorra, where only 27.01 %, Sweden with 30.01 % and
the Netherlands with 39.75 % believe that women are less than men.
In France, Britain and the United States(US), it reported 56 %, 54.6 % and 57.31 % in gender discrimination.
vi.As per the UNDP ,despite the decades of progress the number shows that women are facing invisible barriers
to equality.
vii.Way forward: The UNDP has urged all governments and institutions to take advantage of new policies to
change discriminatory beliefs and traditions for women and for this, resort to raising the level of education and
awareness.

i.This year (2020) marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing+25),
the key visionary agenda on women’s empowerment to date.

Moody’s again lowers India’s growth projections to 5.3% from 5.4%: Impact of Coronavirus
On March 9, 2020 Moody’s Investors Service, a rating agency again lowered India’s growth projection
to 5.3% for 2020 as a result of Coronavirus (COVID-19), previously on February 17, 2020 it had reduced
India’s growth projection from 6.6% to 5.4% for 2020.
Key Points:
i.Moody’s Global Macro Outlook stated that the spread of COVID- 19 will result in simultaneous supply
& demand shocks which will result in further slowing down of the global economic activity particularly in the
1st half of this year
ii.And so the baseline growth forecasts 2020 is being revised for all G-20 economies & accordingly these
countries, as a group, are expected to grow by 2.1% in 2020, 0.3 percentage point lower than Moody’s previous
forecast.
iii.Even if there is extensive fall down India’s growth will be projected to fall to 5%.
iv.The growth forecast for China has been lowered to 4.8% in 2020 from5.2% & United States to 1.5% in
2020 from 1.7% .

Telangana State Agricultural University Vice Chancellor Praveen Rao wins Dr MS Swaminathan
Award
On March 9, 2020 V Praveen Rao, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Professor JayaShankar Telangana State Agricultural
University (PJTSAU), won the 7th edition of Dr MS Swaminathan Award for the period 2017- 2019. The
award will be conferred on him in June 2020. The award was constituted by Retired Indian Council of
Agricultural Research Employees Association (RICAREA) and Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL).
Cash Prize: The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation.

Lt Gen KJS Dhillon to take charge as DG DIA, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (DCIDS)
On 9th March 2020, it is announced by the Ministry of Defence that Lt Gen Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon
(57) will be appointed as a Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence
Staff, under the Chief of Defence staff (CDS) in the Department of Military Affairs, replacing Lt Gen AS Bedi.
• Lt Gen KJS Dhillon of Indian Military Academy (IMA) served as XV Corps and handed over the
charge to Lt Gen Baggavalli Somashekar Raju. Lt Gen B.S. Raju has taken charge as a XV Corps
commander from 1st March 2020 in Srinagar.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) recognizes WMH a sole Master entity responsible for organizing

Maltese Footballer Andre Schembri announced retirement


On March 9, 2020 Maltese Footballer Andre Schembri, 33 years old, is currently playing for Chennaiyin FC’s
(Football Club) announced that he will retire from professional football after the Hero Indian Super
League (ISL) final against ATK FC in Goa on March 14, 2020. He announced retirement from international
football in November 2018 after 94 appearances for his nation.

i.About Andre Schembri: Schembri, a forward football player, and the first Maltese player in ISL and also an
integral part of Chennaiyin FC’s success to win its title for the 3rd time.
ii.Schembri scored CFC’s first goal for the season (2019-20) against Hyderabad FC.

Punjab Government launched “Cova Punjab” mobile app to spread awareness on Coronavirus
On March 9, 2020 The Punjab Government launched “Cova Punjab” mobile application to spread awareness
and precautions to be taken against coronavirus. The application was launched by Punjab Chief Secretary
Karan Avtar Singh. The application was developed by the Department of Government Reforms and Public
Grievances in consultation with the Health & Family Welfare Department.
Key Points:
i.About Cova Punjab app: The application provides options to check for symptoms as provided by the
government from time to time and preventive care advisories.
ii.The application also suggests the nearest hospital where people can report in case they show symptoms of
the virus.
iii.The dynamic map on the app is provided with a real-time counter which will help citizens updated about the
status of the spread of corona in the state.
iv.The Cova Punjab application can be downloaded from Android Play Store and iOS (iPhone Operating System)
AppStore.

Andhra Pradesh CM lauched NIGHA app to control electoral malpractices


On March 8, 2020 Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister (CM) Yeduguri Sandinti Jaganmohan Reddy launched
the NIGHA application at Tadepalli, Andhra Pradesh. The app is aimed at curbing the use of money and alcohol
in the upcoming local body elections & launched in addition to the measures taken by State Election
Commission & Police department in order to control the electoral malpractices.The app was developed
by Department of Panchayat Raj.

Key Points:
i.About NIGHA App: Citizens can download the NIGHA app on their smartphones and it allows the people to
upload photos and videos of distribution of money, alcohol or any other activity that violates MCC (Model Code
of Conduct).
ii.The complaint registered through the app will be routed automatically to Central Control Room (CCR) &
information will be shared with the officials concerned, actions will be taken.

iii.The State government had earlier brought an ordinance to make amendments to the AP Panchayat Raj Act to
take strict actions against flow of money and liquor in elections.
iv.Irrespective of the party affiliation, if the candidate violates the MCC will be imprisoned to (2- 3 years) and
disqualification in the election.
v.PV Ramesh, Special Secretary to AP CM, Gopal Krishna Dwivedi, Panchayat Raj Principal Secretary and
Commissioner Girija Shankar were present during the occasion.

Dr A Mallikarjuna, Dr YSR Aarogyasri Healthcare Trust Chief Executive Officer (CEO), announced that the State
Government (govt) cleared dues of Rs 144.22 crore to 750 network hospitals under the Dr YSR Aarogyasri
scheme.
The State govt clears Rs 361 crore on February 5, 2020 and Rs 144.22 crores on March 6, 2020 to the network
of hospitals.
