Cabinet approves Allotment of 5 MHz spectrum in 700 MHz band to Indian Railways

• Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal for allotment of 5 MHz

Spectrum in 700 MHz frequency band to Indian Railways for public safety and security services at stations and in

trains.

• With this spectrum, Indian Railways has envisaged to provide LTE (Long Term Evolution) based Mobile Train Radio

Communication on its route. The estimated investment in the project is more than Rs. 25,000 Crore. The project will be

completed in the next 5 years.

• In addition to this, Indian Railways has approved TCAS (Train Collision Avoidance System), an indigenously developed

ATP (Automatic Train Protection) System, which will help in avoiding train collisions thereby reducing accidents and

ensuring passenger safety.

Digital India Corporation & Indian Council of Agricultural Research signs MoU

• In order to facilitate farmers by providing location specific ‘Demand Based Tele Agriculture Advisories’, the Indian

Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Digital India Corporation (DIC),

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology have signed an MoU.

• The event was presided over by Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General (ICAR)

• The objective of the MoU is to integrate the existing Interactive Information Dissemination System (IIDS) platform of DIC

with the proposed KisanSarathi program of ICAR and its implementation through ICAR network to reach a large number

of farmers across the country.

• IIDS gives an option to farmers to receive individual needs-based information for only those services to which they have

subscribed. The experts at the back end will have access to the farmers’ database while responding to their queries. In

this manner, experts would be able to understand the problems raised by farmers or field problems in a better way (KYF

– Know Your Farmer) and expeditiously provide appropriate solutions to the farmer in a personalized manner.

• Currently the IIDS platform has been deployed in North Eastern states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana which would be

extended to all over the country with this MoU with ICAR.

Raksha Mantri invites Swedish firms to invest in defence corridors in Uttar Pradesh & Tamil Nadu

• A webinar on India-Sweden Defence Industry Cooperation, with the theme ‘Capitalizing Opportunities for Growth and

Security’, was organised. It was organised under the aegis of Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence

through Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) and Swedish Security and Defence Industry (SOFF).

• Shri Rajnath Singh invited Swedish firms to invest in Defence Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

• Shri Rajnath Singh also released the first edition of the 'SIDM Members Directory 2020-21' – A 360º Overview of the

Indian Defence and Aerospace Sector’.

Rs 40,700 crores allocated under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen)

• The Ministry of Jal Shakti under Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G) Phase 2 is poised to support over two lakh

villages achieve solid and liquid waste management (SLWM) arrangements through an investment of over Rs. 40,700

crores in the present FY 2021-22. The National Scheme Sanctioning Committee (NSSC) of SBM-G under the

Chairmanship of Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti approved the Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) of States and UTs.

• While the Central share would be around Rs.14,000 crores, the States shall spend over Rs.8300 crores. Funds to the

tune of Rs. 12,730 crores will be made available through the Fifteenth Finance Commission and over Rs.4,100 through

convergence with MGNREGS.

• Further, over Rs.1500 crore will be invested by the States through other sources e.g. Business Model, CSR, other

schemes, etc. SBM (G) Phase 2 aims at achieving comprehensive cleanliness in villages also called ODF Plus status by

focusing on ODF sustainability and ensuring SLWM arrangements in villages.

• Implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase 2 in 2021-2022 will see construction of over 50 lakh

Individual Household toilets (IHHLs), one Lakh Community toilets, Plastic Waste Management Units in over 2400 Blocks

of India, Gobardhan projects in 386 Districts, Faecal sludge management arrangements in over 250 Districts apart from

the targeted support for over 2 lakh villages in implementation of SLWM interventions.

India’s first VSC based HVDC System

• Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna CPSU under Ministry of Power, Government of

India, has commissioned Monopole-I of the ± 320 kV, 2000 Mega-Watt (MW), Pugalur (Tamil Nadu) – Thrissur (Kerala)

Voltage Source Convertor (VSC) based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) System.

• This Project strengthens the power system of Southern Region of our Country. It may be recalled that Monopole-II of the

project was inaugurated in February, 2021 and with the commissioning of Monopole-I, the project has attained its full

capacity.

• The Pugalur-Thrissur HVDC system, costing Rs. 5070 crore, is a part of the Raigarh-Pugalur-Thrissur 6000 MW HVDC

system and enables transfer of 2000 MW to Kerala through the VSC HVDC station at Thrissur.

• The state-of-the-art VSC Technology has been brought to India for the first time by POWERGRID through this Project.

The VSC technology significantly reduces the land requirement compared to the conventional HVDC systems and is

particularly suitable for areas, where land is scarce. It also facilitates development of smart grid and improves system

resilience under various operating conditions. A unique feature of this project is the combination of overhead line and

underground cable to address the restricted availability of transmission corridor in Kerala.

• Major HVDC equipment like interface transformers and IGBT-based power convertors, AC equipment such as Gas

Insulated Sub-station, switchgear, controls and relay panels have been supplied by factories in India, thereby giving a

major boost to the Prime Minister’s Make in India program. A significant part of the design, engineering, testing and

commissioning for this VSC project has been done in India”.

Kiren Rijiju Releases E-Book on 20 Medicinal Plants for Covid-19 Care

• Minister of State for Ayush (IC), Shri Kiren Rijiju, released the e-book on 20 Medicinal Plants for Covid-19 Care

• National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), has prepared an e-book “20 Medicinal Plants for 2021 for Covid-19 care” to
highlight important medicinal plants and their therapeutic properties. These medicinal plants are useful in the prevention

& management of Covid-19 along with standard of care.

• NITI Aayog and Piramal Foundation launched Surakshit Hum Surakshit Tum Abhiyaan in 112 Aspirational Districts to

assist district administrations in providing home-care support to Covid-19 patients who are asymptomatic or have mild

symptoms.

• The Abhiyaan is being part of a special initiative, Aspirational Districts Collaborative, in which local leaders, civil societies

and volunteers work with district administrations to address emerging problems across key focus areas of the

Aspirational Districts Programme.

• Surakshit Hum Surakshit Tum Abhiyaan will be led by district magistrates in partnership with over 1000 local NGOs,

which will enlist and train over 1 lakh volunteers to connect with patients through inbound/outbound calls. Piramal

Foundation will work with district magistrates to support the training of NGOs and volunteers.

• The campaign is expected to play a key role in district preparedness for managing nearly 70% of Covid cases at home,

reducing pressure on the health system, and stemming the spread of fear amongst the people. The campaign will also

undertake capacity building of citizens for correct usage of Oxygen concentrators that have been supplied to these

districts.

• Volunteers will be trained to support 20 affected families each by educating caretakers to follow Covid protocols, provide

psycho-social support and timely updates about patients to the administration.

CESL and Ladakh sign a MoU to make the Union Territory carbon neutral

• Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL)

under Ministry of Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Administration of Union Territory

(UT) of Ladakh, to make it a clean and green UT. Under the MoU, various clean energy and energy efficiency

programmes will be implemented.

• Beginning with a pilot in the Zanskar valley area, CESL will take up solar mini and micro grid solutions, energy efficient

lighting, energy storage-based solutions, efficient cooking stoves and electric mobility solutions in the UT.

The Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd, Adoor, Kerala - Extension of period

• The Reserve Bank of India issued Directions to The Adoor Co-operative Urban Bank Ltd, Adoor, Kerala under Section

35 A read with Section 56 of the BR Act 1949 from close of business on November 09, 2018 for a period of six months,

which were extended from time to time, last being up to June 09, 2021.

• The Reserve Bank of India is satisfied that in the public interest, it is necessary to extend the period of operation of the

aforesaid Directions & shall continue to apply to the bank for a further period of three months, from June 10, 2021 to

September 09, 2021.

Sikar Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd, Sikar, Rajasthan- Extension of validity

• Sikar Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., Sikar, Rajasthan was placed under All-Inclusive Directions from close of business

on November 09, 2018 for a period of six months subject to review, vide Directive dated October 26, 2018. The validity of

the directions was last extended vide Directive dated March 09, 2021 for three months up to June 09, 2021, subject to

review.

• Reserve Bank of India, in exercise of powers vested in it under sub-section (1) of Section 35 A of Banking Regulation

Act, 1949 read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, hereby directs that the validity of which was last

extended up to June 09, 2021, shall continue to apply to the bank for a further period of three months from June 10,

2021 to September 09, 2021.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on The Dhrangadhra People’s Co-operative Bank Ltd. Dhrangadhra,

Dist. Surendranagar, Gujarat

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalty of ₹2.00 lakh on The Dhrangadhra People’s Co-

operative Bank Ltd., Dhrangadhra, Dist. Surendranagar, Gujarat (the bank) for non-compliance with RBI directions on

‘Placement of Deposits with Other Banks by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs)’ and ‘Depositor Education and

Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014’.

• This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in the RBI under the provisions of section 47 A (1) I read

with section 46 (4) (i) and section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, taking into account the failure of the bank to

adhere to the aforesaid directions issued by the RBI.

Central Bank of India Allotted Preferential Shares

• Central Bank of India’s board has allotted over 280,53,76,972 equity shares at the issue price of Rs 17.11 per share to

the government on preferential basis for Rs 4,800 crore capital infusion in the bank.

• After this allotment, the govt’s shareholding has increased from 89.78 percent to 93.08 percent.

ISRO will assist development projects in the Northeast through Space Technology

• Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel,

Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh said that ISRO (Indian Space Research

Organisation) will assist development projects in the Northeast through Space Technology and will contribute by offering

optimum utilization of Satellite Imaging and other Space Technology applications for better accomplishment of

infrastructural projects in all the eight States of the North Eastern Region.

• ISRO is already monitoring and Geo-tagging 67 projects at 221 sites in all the 8 States funded by MDoNER/NEC.

• This is first of its kind in the whole country, where there is an institutionalised involvement of ISRO in mapping and

sharing of data for developmental projects and can become a model for other States too.

• The North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) is an autonomous organisation under Department of Space at

Shillong and provides dedicated service to the North Eastern Region (NER) of India comprising of eight states viz.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

• Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, (IICT), a constituent laboratory of CSIR and Lee Pharma, an integrated

pharmaceutical company, based in Hyderabad have entered into a non-exclusive licensing agreement for the synthesis
of 2-Deoxy-D-Glucose (2-DG).

• Recently, 2-DG developed by DRDO and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has received approval for use in Covid-19 patients. It

has been found to help speed up recovery and reduce oxygen dependence and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories has launched

the drug in the form of sachets.

Novel technique could help detect tropical cyclones for Bay of Bengal Basin earlier than satellites

• Indian Scientists have found a promising technique for early detection of development or strengthening of tropical

• A team of Scientists including Jiya Albert, Bishnupriya Sahoo, and Prasad K. Bhaskaran from IIT Kharagpur, with

support from the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India under the Climate Change Programme

(CCP), devised a novel method using Eddy detection technique to investigate the formative stages and advance

detection time of tropical cyclogenesis in the North Indian Ocean region.

• The study was conducted with cases of four post-monsoon severe cyclones –Phailin (2013), Vardah (2013), Gaja (2018),

Madi (2013), and two pre-monsoon cyclones Mora (2017) and Aila (2009) that developed over North Indian Ocean.

brought home the Team Silver medal after an excellent performance in the World Championship in Netherlands

• In Women’s and Men’s Individual Recurve event, Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das won the Gold Medal in their respective
