SECTION 1 (Time: 45 minutes)

Content to be taught in this section: There is always a solution to a problem. Deriving the Associated
quadratic formula. Objective(s): 1, 2
Teaching Points:
No matter how tough the situation, a solution can always be found.
We can find a different way to solve a quadratic equation, other than factorization.
1. Identify coefficient of x2, a, coefficient of x, b and the constant value, c in the given quadratic equation.

𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0

2. Determine whether the curve is ∩ shaped or U shaped.

3. Determine the type of roots

4. Find the x-ordinate(s) where the curve cuts the x-axis, by solving the quadratic equation.

5. Find the y-ordinate where the curve cuts the y-axis.

6. Determine the type of stationary point

7. Find the coordinates of the stationary point.

8. Plot the points found in the steps above.

9. Connect the points with an appropriate curve to sketch the graph of the quadratic equation.

Method
Teaching Strategy Student Activity/Task Resources
Students in their “kingdoms” follow the Worksheets, game
Game Based Learning – teacher puts instructions to sketch the graphs of the quadratic map, game
students into “kingdoms” / groups and functions. First kingdom to correctly sketch all instructions
gives students instructions for game. graphs wins the war.
Students discuss and share one thing they liked
about playing a game in the class.
Questions to pose to students to develop understanding:

1. Is the curve ∩ shaped or U shaped? Give a reason.

2. Does the curve cut the x-axis? What is this called?

3. If yes to 2, how many places does it cut the x-axis?

4. Where does the curve cut the y-axis?

5. What is this point called?

6. What type of stationary point does the curve have?

7. What method will you use to solve the quadratic function?

Associated
Sectional Review (Assessment): (Time: 5 minutes) Outcome(s): 1, 2

The five nations of Oaktown, Stonehaven, Millcastle, Waterwick and Fairgate are

warring with each other. As members of your Nation’s Wizarding Guild you must each

work quickly to sketch the curves the spells follow.

There are 4 spells in the form of quadratic equations. By sketching the curves of each

quadratic function, match which nations are casting spells between them.

Your lower-level mages report the following quadratic equations.

1
• 𝑦 = − 4 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5

• 𝑦 = 0.11𝑥 2 − 0.4𝑥 + 2.8

3
• 𝑦 = − 10 (𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 8)

1
• 𝑦 = 5 (𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 11)
