Rear Axle Assemble

1. NOTE:

Spring pins can be removed (if necessary) by tapping threads in each pin (1/4 in. tap inner pin, 1/2
in. tap outer pin). Install slide hammer and remove pins from bore.

Slot on outer spring pin must be located as shown.

T108091-UN: Inner Pin 180° from Outer Pin

T106495-UN: Spring Pins Installation

Install spring pins (if removed) into blind holes of differential hub. Install inner spring pin with slot 180° from outer pin.

2. NOTE:

Make sure spring pins are aligned with bores in bevel gear.

3. IMPORTANT:

Thrust washer must be installed with dimpled side facing side gear. If thrust washer is installed
improperly, inadequate lubrication of side gear could lead to a differential failure.

Install DFT1286 Backlash Bar.

17. NOTE:

Straightedge of DFT1286 tool indicates position to record backlash.

Install a dial indicator so it's positioned 126 mm from center of input flange to correspond to the outer tooth diameter of
the ring gear.

0.006—0.010 in.

Too little backlash —install thicker shim behind outer bearing cup shown in previous steps. The shim thickness
for bearing preload shown in previous steps must be reduced accordingly.

Too much backlash —install thinner shim behind outer bearing cup shown in previous steps. The shim
thickness for bearing preload shown in previous steps must be increased accordingly.

18. Remove differential housing cover.

19. To verify measurements are correct. See Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Check . (Group 0250.)
