Types of Discontinuity

HOLE/REMOVABLE DISCONTINUITY
• This discontinuity occurs when
there is a hole in the graph of the
function.
HOLE DISCONTINUITY
• It is characterized by the fact that
the limit exists.
• It can be “fixed” by re-defining
the function.
Consider the functions below:
𝒙𝟐 −𝟒
1. 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙−𝟐

𝟐𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟑
𝟐. 𝒇 𝒙 =
𝒙+𝟑
JUMP DISCONTINUITY
• This discontinuity occurs when
the graph of a function stops at
one point and seems to jump at
another point.
• In a jump discontinuity, the left
hand and the right hand limit
exist but not equal.
Consider the functions below:

𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐 ; 𝒙 < 𝟑
1. 𝒇 𝒙 = ቊ
𝒙 − 𝟏 ;𝒙 ≥ 𝟑

𝟐
𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟐 ; 𝒙 < 𝟐
𝟐. 𝒇 𝒙 = ቊ
𝒙 + 𝟑 ;𝒙 ≥ 𝟐
INIFINITE DISCONTINUITY
• In this type of discontinuity,
at least one of the two limits
is infinite.
Consider the functions below:
𝟑
1. 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙−𝟐

𝟐
𝟐. 𝒇 𝒙 =
𝒙+𝟒
Determine whether the following functions are
continuous or not. If they are not, classify them
as removable, jump or infinite.
𝑥 2 −36
1. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥+6
𝑎𝑡 𝑥 = −6

2𝑥 − 3 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 1
2. 𝑓 𝑥 = ቊ
−4 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 1
3
3. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥−1
𝑎𝑡 𝑥 = 1
